We can work out the most efficient skill up path vs cost.

A quick bit of fiddling seems to show that the point to switch from Electrum to gold is after Opals but before Black Pearl.

Assuming an int of 255 and no Geerlock and that jewelery is "easy".

Naturally the answer will be different for each set of circumstances.

I wonder if I will have the time / inclination to check each of the swich over points between the metals.

Well, electrum-gold switch is not where the price crunch comes. Plus, switch occurs in 140-150 vicinity. and the gap is such that your fail chance is really never below 70% - even without geerlok. If your INT is at 255, it is probably just best to do electrum up to the last gem which price is still comparable to cost of a gold bar (opal).
