  • A new LDoN feature that seems like it could complement tradeskilling

I got this from the Developer's Corner at the Sony site:

The Lost Dungeons of Norrath introduces an exciting new type of treasure to EverQuest. Using new modular items gained from dungeon adventures, characters are able to modify the powers and effects of their equipment, allowing for a tremendous amount of customization.
Using these new items, characters can augment an existing breastplate, for example. Bonding the proper augmentation item to the breastplate might give it +5 strength. Bonding a different augmentation item could give it +6 wisdom. These are just a few simple examples; the new items have a wide variety of possible effects and benefits.
Have a helmet that you like, but think needs a little boost? This new item system allows you to customize that helmet and make it fit your character's needs better. Most characters have a favorite item that they've had in their bank for a while. They don't want to destroy it because it holds some memories, a link to the adventures they had gaining it. With this new item augmentation system, those items gain new life and endless potential!
Depending on how these little add-ons work, I could see this being a nice way to add some personality to hand-made items, allowing you to take something you made to skill up on and augment it in a way that makes it a lot more marketable.

Obviously, it remains to be seen -- the same augmentation device could make a competing drop even better, too, but in theory this might make certain recipes much more viable for sales than previously.

Wonder if this would up the stats, but turn it into a nodrop item with the same name...or if there's only a set type of change allowed.
Maybe it would be a nofail combine though, just put the module and the item in something and combine it.
Any more "new features" and LDoN is gonna end up being a total conversion mod.

Bet this wreaks havoc in the bazaar and at Magelo

dangit atonic, i was gonna say that

those who remember such things can tell you that sockets in D2 was a mostly useless feature in all but a few situations.

While I normally avoid the "OMG SONY STOLE THIS FROM XXXX", I have to say that your statement was my first reaction.

Not sure I like the thought, but we'll see how it is implemented.

Sounds pretty cool. Makes some loot really nice because it allows you to add stats to any slot. There aren't many other items in the game that can go in any slot.

Would be really cool to see this done with tradeskills.

I just wonder how much you can up stats on a particular item. You don't want people making bracers with 200wis or such on them.

I just wish they'd do something with charms from LoY. Such an interesting idea gone to waste.

Charms seemed like a sort of little extra boost that wasn't supposed to really change your character much, just a nice little extra stat boost that wouldn't really affect a character's power.

Then came the free charm for pop planes, which, IMHO, kinda killed the whole concept.

Maybe LDoN will play off the idea of a charm being better when you use specific peices of armor/weapons, though I doubt any of it will be on the power level of the PoP charm.

As far as the 'sockets' idea, I think it makes sence from an EQ standpoint even if it's similar to the Diablo 2 method.
D2's sockets are likely going to be a lot more complex since that game has runewords that can be used in a certain sequence to make special weapons/armor, gems, and such that add things like light radius, life steal, extra damage to demons, etc.
EQ's 'sockets' will likely be just 'Add to armor to add 10 Dex' and all that will change on the peice you add it to will be that it has 10 more Dex.

I see this as being a very nice addition as there are many items that have something quite useful about it, but lack something else badly... take for example my Tijoley's Bracelet. It has great AC, but it has practically nothing else. If I where to find a couple items that give it some resists, some WIS, and maybe some AGI, then I'd be a happy camper.

Quite likely items will only accept a certain number of 'sockets' and some items won't accept any... we shall see.

LOL - I've got some doubts too thanks to how well the executed charms.

Figure that they'll do one of three things -

                  1) Have a repeat of the whole charms thing
                  2) Learn thier lesson but overcompensate, causing everyone and thier mom to get tons of these gems in the first few days, forcing a nerf of either the drops or the effects a few days later
                  3) Get it just right

I don't get the impression that this is going to be a tradeskill exclusive thing though - smart plat says that they'll either make it so that it's a no-fail combine in a trade container, there will be a quest/purchased container to make the no-fail combine in or that they'll make it so that the item itself is the container that you just place the item in and hit the combine button.

The real quest is will the "gem of wisdom boosting" have the same effect on all items it can work with, or will it work better with some items then with others - ie/+3 for a thurg helm, +4 for a SS helm and +5 for a Kael helm?
                  Cigarskunk!
No more EQ for me till they fix the crash bug.

Um no. Most the charms that you get from loy are great if you don't have POP flags/keys yet. and it takes 3 or 4 flags or keys before the charm is better than what can be gotten from LOY.

So until you get your 3 or 4 flags the loy charms are still great. Now if you were already in elementals or higher when LOY cameout you probably were not spending to much time there or worried about the minor benefits the loy charms provided in the first place.

The only problem with the loy charms was the low availablitity of them I have and still do hunt loy zones regularly. I have yet to see a charm drop. Up until I got my 4 pop keys I currently have I would have loved to have any one of the loy charms in my charm slot.

If nothing else, it'll be useful for upgrading people's INT/WIS(/STR/DEX) tradeskilling outfits.

Aye...will definitely be very nice for tradeskill gear sets for skilling up, depending on the rarity of these augment items... simply using the example they give and expanding it.....how'd ya like to have +6 int or wis on EVERY piece of your tradeskill gear set? would make it so much easier for any class to hit the 305/355 cap =) I'm sure it wouldn't be all that easy to get that particular mod for every piece/slot...but this definitely has a lot of potential, very curious about how they're going to implement it...especially if they're planning on doing any ac/resists/hp/mana boost augments..or effects... few more weeks til we find out

                              hmm

Well I hope the add on items are only usable on player made gear! Also I hope that the smithed items require smithing to do and the tailored items tailoring etc.

A failure rate or no drop/lore product seems a fair situation.

I would love to put some resists on my Underfoot plate!

Presumably there will be differring levels of difficulty in LDON and to get these add ons the higher levels of dofficulty will give the better drops.
