  • Satellite Internet, lag and tradeskills....

    /first post ever dance!!!

Well anyway, I live waaaaaay out in the middle of no ware, so no phone line (nearest one is 40 miles away). So i have a Satelliteinternet (starband system) and the handy side effects of Satellite internet are:

    1. Fast browsing speed
    2. No need to dial up

    3. And a absalutly HUGE ping rate! (about 1000 to 4500!

How much does ping mess up combines? I usually go to Ogok at 2:am alaska time to do combines and that works pretty good.

    Thanks all for any info

Lag never used to make any difference at all in tradeskilling.

I had lag spikes on many a combine in high traffic areas or for other problems with no change in success rate. Certainly I have never lost an item.

Technically I still haven't ever lost anything (other than on failed combines ).

Others are reporting in high lag situations like bazaar/pok combines they are now losing items, seems to be a bug from the most recent patch. With that type of speed you may encounter it.

I'd just do a few stacks of cheap combines and see if anything strange happens, then make something more expensive if all goes well.

I'm not familiar with Satalight internet.

Is that cable modem in alaska?

Satelite Internet is only a fast download, the upload is relatively slow. To game fast you need fast speeds both ways.

          lag and combines

Well, normally I play on a cable connection at home with ping of 120ish, and no problems.

When I'm on the road and playing, the verizon dsl here at the corp apt tends to have a ping of 600ish. That extra time between clicking and getting the games response drives me buggy.

            satellite modem

Well some of the people here might know me, I do tradeskills on Tunare. As far as satellite goes the ping rate can vary widely by where you are compared to the satellite itself that is sending information back and forth. The lag that most people get isn't the same as the lag you get on satellite (been on satellite for over 2 years...when earthlink was just in beta testing). The signal from a two way satellite modem takes about 0.5 to 0.75 seconds to go from your home to the satellite and back (40k miles at light speed each way+transfers to ground based wires etc) this effectively makes it so each combine will take a split second longer then it would via say a telephone line so it does effect you while doing tradeskills.

It works, but can be a pain, I wish you luck that you have a good signal strength as mine can vary widely and bad weather can make it so that it goes to zero...right when you want to play since there is nothing else to do.

              Thanks for all the Info

hehe its fun to think about when im smithing, my forging arm has to travel 40k miles before my hammer hits the ore.

another thing that I have heard about is the "sit-stand" method of tradeskiling, you know ware you sit and then stand then hit the combine button. A elf said that it helped even out the lag or something. Is this true? Or one of those tradeskillers myth’s?

If anything the “sit-stand” method would help work out the calves and ankles, hehe cant be getting all flabby wile working da forge

sit stand, jump up, random rolls for consecutive high numbers.... basically all these ideas are doing is causing a recent sync between your client and the server. idea being some recent traffic means the important data *yer up* isn't gettin lost in the noise

(hehe, at least your sat modem is working for eq)... me; I haven't figured out how to get SoE's servers to deal with the asymetric nature of my DirecPC... down by sat... up by phone... very different routes and the servers just fail open on me.

Perhaps this is obvious...I almost always do trade skill from top view (one press of F9) to reduce lag.

I use this also in the bazaar. With the map funtion and the find trader function in /bazaar, I wander through the bazaar without ever looking where I am going.
