That's what happens when I go on a trip for a week and think about EQ all the time -- I come up with a question, post it, and find that the exact same question had been posted while I was gone. :?
OK, one locked thread later ...
The question I'd asked in the other thread:
I guess what I'm thinking is that for the next expansion, SOE would announce, "We have implemented 126 new smithing recipes, 314 new brewing recipes, ... and 71 new alchemy recipes. However, none of the recipes are available through in-game sources such as books or NPC quest text. It is up to players to experiment and find the new combinations. Some of the new recipes require items from this expansion, but many only use items that previously existed in the game."
How would you guys feel about that? Would it be more interesting for you if we had to experiment to find items, rather than just read books? (And yes, I made up those numbers by randomly hitting the number pad.)
Personally, I think it would be nice if they included a "mix" of items -- some with recipes, some without. If they follow existing patterns (e.g., ore plus file plus temper = ring, etc.), it might be fun to see how many variations you could come up with. It then becomes a kind of race to see who can get the right materials first.
Oh, wait. They did that. It's called PoP. :/
OK, attempt number two. They give us a list of items that are combinable (as in used in tradeskill recipes, not just showing up as "combinable" in the bazaar search). We then experiment with those items to come up with new recipes. This reduces the stress that would result from another Bristlebane's platter. If the recipes exist just as recipes (not as a bottleneck to a quest), then they become their own reward. Make the stats on the resulting items nice (but not overpowering), and people will experiment to find the next goodie.
Thoughts?
