  • Am I addicted to tradeskilling?

I set up another account this weekend for the sole purpose of a Bazaar trader. Someone who can sell all my tradeskilled items from my other toons and can stay on 24/7 while I farm/level/and skill up?
    Does this consitute EQ addiction?

No, this does not constitute EQ addiction

    No really, it does not.

Of course, this is coming from someone who bought a second account and set up a bazaar mule the day after bazaar went live.

My other puter sucks, so I can only manage to log my bazaar mule there, and stand there all day and night. If I need to move her or rearrange stuff, or get things from bank, I log in with the good puter.

Not proof positive, you could just be too competitive for your own good - but it's a pretty good indication of a growing addiction.

I just took my girlfriend out to a movie. Am I addicted to movies? Am I addicted to my girlfriend?

*grin* No, I dont have a girlfriend right now, but I think you get my point.

People have had hobbies since long before we started branding everything as "Addiction".

Do model enthusiasts worry that they are addicted everytime they complete a new model plane?

Do Car enthusiasts seek counseling whenever they replace a part of their car?

No, they dont. And you shouldn't either. Enjoy your hobby. Don't let the media convince you that your hobby is going to make you lock yourself in a room and shoot yourself over your characters death.

"Addiction" a word that lost all meaning late in the 20th century due to overuse by the pop media.

I suppose the Wright Brothers were addicted to something, someone should have shot them up with methodone and kept them away from their tools.

(No, not trying to compare us to the great thinkers and inventors just trying to illustrate a point. Everyone who came before the Wright brothers was... um... /chuckle shall we say less than intelligent or successful but were no less dedicated. Maybe THEY should have been prevented... hindsight is 20/20 eh?)

ummmmmmm..... the Wright brothers added something to the betterment of society. Giving more money (i swear I almost said 'plat' right there) to an already greedy and glutted corporation that cannot possibly have your best interests at heart is not going to better anyone or anything except some executive's beautiful pocket.

That moment of biting pessimism/nihilism aside...
                here's another.

I am addicted. I freely admit this. Every year since, oh, seventh grade, I have had to have one overriding addiction, some THING that is totally at odds with the doing-homework idea, something that gives me a reason to keep doing all the UTTER(philosophyclass)CRAP that life cannot bear to let me live without. The only difference is, Everquest IS the first thing that has impacted my grades in so dangerously a negative way.

Is it directly Everquest's fault? Probably not. No matter what my addiction this year would have been, that THING would have gotten in the way of me studying. But, still, that THING now is EQ.

I go into EQ withdrawl. I start hearing the music in my head. (Not surprising after 13 years of musical training.) I start thinking about clicking things to make tradeskill items. (heh, note: not thinking about XPing, thinking about Tradeskilling.) I mildly berate myself if I go out of the room, like to class or to see the BF, and forget to set myself in trader.

Are you addicted for making a second account? Not if you can afford it, ie, not if eating is still more important to you than EQ, and not if paying for two accounts doesn't prevent you from making important (house-type) payments on time. Am I? Yes.

                Am I going to stop?

                ....
                ....
                ....

                can i?

Having initially started my second account solely for additional bank slots for tradeskill items, and being *positive* that I am *comepletely* normal (and anyone who says otherwise IS OUT TO GET ME! THEY ARE *ALL* OUT TO GET ME! YOU'LL SEE! YOU'LL SEE!)

                  ahem.... <clears throat>

No, you are perfectly fine, dear chap. Nothing to see there. Move along.

LOL I know I'm addicted )) I have 3 accounts and 3 computers networked so that I can have 2 sellers in the Bazaar selling the stuff I make and also what I find on vendors. )) I do have to say that I sometimes log off one of the sellers, (and I have 4 tunes on that account that are level 20 or higher), just to play for some experience. But really, are you addicted ?? "Only the shadow knows for sure." ))

Heh. After three years... yeah, I'd say I'm addicted. I do get irritated with myself when I forget to put up a trader at night when I go to bed.

However! I have NOT gone so far as to get a second account.

Of course, the fact that a friend gave me the codes to her second account to use means nothing. NOTHING I TELL YOU!

I won't go into saying what is EQ addiction and what's not, since I don't feel I'm in any position to judge...

/em thinks about her 7 accounts between her and her husband, and some 20+ characters all over level 30, with at least 5 over level 50 and four computers running EQ simultaneously during a "serious" play session, and a permanent bazaar mule who is up 24/7 and a backup dial-up connection for when the T1 goes down...

Seriously...don't worry if you're addicted or not. You'll know if you're addicted, you'll know if it's time to cut back, and if you're addicted...so what? Being addicted to EQ is (IMO) a whole lot better then being addicted to drugs, booze, or many other dangerous things. As long as your quality of life isn't suffering, and as long as you have your priorities in order (i.e., work, relationships that are important to you, friendships, family, household stuff, school, etc.) then have fun with EQ!!! Goodness knows it won't be around forever, and EQ is so unique inandof itself, might as well enjoy it while you can.

Besides, having a hobby/addiction makes someone feel good about themselves...it makes someone feel like they accomplished something, it makes someone happier because it's something they enjoy doing. Unles the addiction/hobby is detrimental to the person or people around them (like drugs), and as long as the addiction is controlled, then there's no major problem.

Enjoy your second account..you'll find that EQ just got a little bit bigger, and the things you can do has expanded.

                          Cend

I don't know whether you are "addicted" (and agree with those who pointed out the concept of addiction has lost all meaning due to media hype), but I know you will soon be much happier.

Creating a second account with a mule to sell in Bazaar 24/7 is the single expenditure that has added the most to my enjoyment of the game, more than any of the expansions and extensions. I created the account last December or so when I finally admitted my old computer was just not up to the ever increasing technical requirements of EQ and bought myself a new one for Christmas. The old one is sufficient for a trader hanging out in Bazaar, so instead of the collecting dust in the spare room, it is serving a useful function.

My cash flow is much better now and, as importantly, moving cash, components, subcombines and other stuff from alt to alt is now relatively easy and does not require inconveniencing another person.

Whether you are "addicted" or not, I hope you enjoy your second account as much as I do.

And just because I slip in and check Bazaar sales if I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night does not mean I'm addicted, right? (Anyone else do that?)
