  • Foraging a few notes.

While I was in the Field of Bone today Running 2 characters, a 41 Druid and a 50 Druid, I was foraging mostly for the Lichenclover. I noticed something I thought would be worth mentioning here.
The 41 Druid has a forage skill of 200, and the 50 Druid has a forage skill of 157.
The following is a listing of what I foraged over a 3 hour period.

200 forage skill druid --- 157 forage skill druid

    Lichen Clover 27 --- 13
    Fruit 8 --- 5
    Water 11 --- 21
    Deadbone Barley 8 --- 8
    Flarefire Seeds 5 --- 5
    Roots 10 --- 11
    Iskar Phalange (dagger) 5 --- 1

Now it is my understanding that the Knife, and the Lichenclover are the rarer forages. It looks to me like the higher the forage skill, the better your chances of foraging a rare forage are? Am I correct? I know that this is just a small sampling, but I did have the same druid there a few days ago and at that time his forage skill was only 165, and It took me about 4 hours to forage 10 of the clovers. Since then I took him to the trainer and since I had 125 unused training points and some extra cash I took him to the 200 skill. It >seems< to have helped with getting the clover.

Please let me know your experiences in this.

    Thanks

      Beg to differ.

2 200 skill druids sit in Misty Thicket and forage for hour after hour day after day trying to get Misty Acorns. (don't get me started.)

And I have noticed 2 things.

Neither I nor my wife remember EVER failing to forage after hitting 200.
(seems like we were both stuck at 199 for the longest time)

We -routinely- get twice (or more) as many "duplicate lore item" messages as Misty Acorns. One session my druid got 7 "lore item" and 2 acorns.

No, the RNG tricks is when I can get 3 acorns in the same time my wife gets none.

But there is NO QUESTION that higher skill = more "rare" items.

(The question is... is the druid/ranger epic item "more rare" than the Misty Acorn, which is why we get it more often at high skill, or is the Misty Acorn the rarest forage in all of Norrath?)

I would test the theory by taking my wood elf mule out into misty and foraging with him as a comparison to my wife's 200 skill....

But I need the acorns.... really really bad....

So if someone ELSE wants to try... be my guest.

You may also want to try equipping the Foraging Machette (quested). It adds 10% to your Foraging skill, so at 200 you're chances of getting a given zone's "rare" forage is even greater.

Is there a foraging site that answers all the basics?

I heard my newbie Woodelf with a forage of 50 can NEVER get rare items. But there is a reference (on this site) that this has changed.

What is truth? Any good resources?

My druid has 150 forage skill, and has foraged a grand total of two misty acorns. Meanwhile, he's foraged sweetened mudroot literally dozens of times. I recently got him a +10% machete, but haven't noticed any difference (zero acorns since that time, numerous mudroot).

My ranger has 27 forage skill, and foraged up two mudroot in the time he was leveling in Misty; he foraged no acorns.

            Acorns are evil.

Unless it's changed since I was at 50 forage, you CAN get rare items. Just don't ever EXPECT it.

You can get rares at base skill.

I made a wood elf druid to use as a tradeskill mule. While i was escorting her to the gfay nexus spires, i clicked forage for fun... you know the rest.

The brought to mind another question - just how rare are the epic forages in the foraging table. At 200 I seem to foarge them in the 4 zones more than anything else - OK that is an exaggeration but I get more mudroots than acorns, and more heartfruit than morning dew. They are usually the first thing I forage on entering any of those zones. Even my baby wood elf bard has a heartfruit now.

I wish I had that sort of success with yew leaves, dragon eggs, or planar oak.

And add me to the list of folks who never fail a forage at 200, although I do get the message that I need to wait longer. I never saw that until recently (forage is still grey'ed at the time - just tied to movement keys) but doesn't happen all the time or it would drive me nuts just walking about.

My Human Ranger has 200 Forage and has never failed a forage in I don't even remember how long. But I too have been getting the "You need to wait longer" message even after the button has poped. Then I have to wait the full time for it to reset again. I think it has to do with the spell casting timer being set to 2 seconds now, started seeing that when they were messing with that stuff. As far as forageing epic items, I too get that a lot more then anything else. And for the people who want Morning Dew go to LFay, no epic forage there and Morning Dew is the "rarest" item on the table I think next to Sylvan Berries.
