  • A dwarf new to tradeskills

Hi there. I recently started a dwarf paladin. I like playing him and I enjoy being a dwarf. I want to start getting in to tradeskills. Maybe for some profit, but moreso to better flesh out my character, and I think I'm going to make a lifelong goal for my dwarf to someday make some underfoot or brellium armor. That would be top shelf IMO.

So anyways what skills do you suggest I focus on? Any dwarves out there with advice for a young dwarf who someday wants to make his self a nice suit of Brellium plate armor?

I'm looking forward to this being a fun part of the game for my character.

    Thanks.

Dont start a tradeskill in hopes of making money. (This is a hotkey)

Brewing would be a good compliment to smithing as you would be able to make your own tempers.

Something I think you’ll soon find is that it’s handy to learn many trade skills, at least to 100, even if you plan to focus on a specific skill. For example, if you want to tailor you’ll soon find you need heady kiolas for skilling up on Wu’s armor. If you practice smithing you’ll need tailoring to make padded armor for skilling up on fine plate armor. If you practice baking you’ll need all kinds of tools, like a pie tin or a filleting knife, which you make with smithing. Or some tools, such as pie tins and cookie cutters, you can make with pottery.

If your just starting out and don’t have a lot of money, I’d suggest searching the forums for guides on skilling up on different trade skills. Give them a try and see what you like. Believe me, it won’t be a waste to have multiple skills. Brewing is the cheapest and easiest skill. All items are store bought and they aren’t very expensive, relatively speaking. In fact, you can get your brewing to 122 for next to nothing. Buy fishing grubs from the gnome vendor in Plane of Knowledge, on the porch across from the “evil” zone, and buy fishing grubs for coppers. Combine one fishing grub and one flask of water. That’s it. This will take you to 122 skill. Baking is also fairly cheap and easy to gain skill in up to 191. There are numerous paths to take for baking. There are fun ways, involving edible goo and my favorite, batwing crunchies. Or you can take the short, effective and dull way of making fillets. Combining one filleting knife with one piece of bear, lion, wolf or mammoth meat. That will take you to 143. From there you can make Patty melts all the way to 191.

Those are just examples. You can find all kinds of posts about how to skill up in different skills. It’s about the most popular post on the boards. There’s all kind of fun to be had with trade skills. With banking and brewing, for example, you can make all kinds of foods and drinks to hand out to other players. If you like to role-play, trade skills can be a great addition to your character.

      Best of luck.

Actually, if you want smithing (as you mentioned with making your own brellium plate), you can quadruple the statement of "don't get into trade skills to make money". Just go into your bank account every day for the next little while, withdraw 1kpp and destroy it. It's much faster than learning smithing.

Seriously, I'm a 192 smith now and know that smithing is difficult and expensive but not impossible. Brewing and baking are cheaper to learn.

If you do want to become a smith, you want to learn the following eventually:

        - tailoring (leather padding, trivials at 31 but you will want at least 50 for insurance. If you want to make engraved velium armor down the road, for yourself, for sale, or for the 8th Coldain Prayer Shawl quest, soft fur padding trivials at 179). Skill needed by: 120 or so for regular leather padding.

        - brewing (cultural tempers trivial at 136; get it at least to 156 for insurance). Skill needed by: 150 or higher.

        - pottery (blessed dust of Tunare for mistletoe cutting sickles trivials at 103, blue diamond powder for highest-end dwarven cultural trivials at around 93). Skill needed by: 188 or higher

        - jewelcraft (if you want to make engraved royal velium armor you will need a jewelcraft around 180; higher is better) Skill needed by: 180 or when/if you choose to make engraved royal velium armor.

Most higher level skills are made easier by learning other skills.

Also make friends with: a cleric of Brell Serilis of at least level 29 (unfortunately I don't think pallys can imbue their own gems) and an enchanter of at least level 49 to enchant your brellium.

As a lvl 51 Pally I can atest we can't imbue jack.

I have financed my entire tradeskill addiction off of my brewing skills. For all those people doing Coldain Quest and those would-be Tailors who are in the Hell Level called Wu's they all need one thing, Heady Kioals. And I am all the more happy (crazy?) to take a few hours and make about 20 stacks, which I sell for 5p per (2K plat). And believe me these things FLY off the shelf. Of course my carpel tunnel reminds me there is a better way but you can't tell me theres an easier way (without twinking) to get all those skill levels below on a lvl 28 Wood Elf (which is my tradeskiller).
