Noob questions on LOY dyes

I followed the advice given yesterday (thanx to all) and raised my brewing and pottery above 100, so I'll be making the prizmatic dyes tonight. Since this project is bankrupting me, maybe I could get some pointers so as to minimize costly mistakes.

1. Are these dyes, or tints? If I dye a slot blue and equip a previously (old dyeing technique) dyed green piece of plate, do I end up with blue, or something the color of puke?

2. What happens to armor that has an ingame color, example Mithril Breastplate?

3. Finally, if I really screw up, can I just redye or remove a dye?

Answers:

1. Prismatic Dyes are applied to Slots. I am not sure if they are tints, or actual color replacements (I lean more to the color replacements). But the only equipment that can be dyed prior to LoY is Fine Steel Plate. And most don't use it (there are better armor pieces out there).

2. In Game equipment colored items have their colors replaced from what I can tell. (even though I can make dyes, and have some, I don't bother tweaking my looks.. I am not fashion concious)

3. When you Dye your armor, you see yourself (3rd person view) and get to twiddle the colors BEFORE confirming the choice. The Dye is not consumed until you confirm. You can do tweaking and fiddling without any Dyes in stock... just for experimentation. And if you decide you want to remove it down the road (or change it)... get more prismatic dyes, and change it. Setting the color to WHITE (0, 0, 0) will remove any tinting/color replacement and return to undyed color. But that requires a prismatic dye.

Based on my experience, they are tints, and not color replacements. If you're wearing a green BP and bronze pants and apply the same color dye to each piece, it will look different. Just play with the color until you like the way it looks over each piece.

I'm sure folks will correct me, if they find I am wrong.

A lot depends on the base color of the item in question. Many of the items out there currently have a tint applied to them by the game, but have a light base color. (Cultural armor, for example, uses banded/fine plate for the base model, then applies a tint over it.) When coloring items such as these, the color stays pretty true to what you have picked.

Other items, however, such as leather armor and some robes, may use a pre-colored model as their base, and then have tints applied to them. In cases like this, the base color *will* affect how the color looks when wearing diferent items. This is why my fashion-conscious enchantress can end up with multiple shades of robes based on one single dye selection of her chest slot.

You can always re-dye an item if you decide you absolutely hate how it looks after you've already "locked in" your choice with the save option, but it will require another dye. I've heard conflicting information on how to reset your colors back to the original tints - either setting it to 0,0,0 or 255, 255, 255 was mentioned. Again, though, it's going to cost you another dye.

edit: hmmm ... during my nonexistant free time, this should probably be made into an FAQ document for the main site. Does anyone a bit less time-impaired feel like whipping up a handy dye guide and FAQ?

Those of us decked in leather are sorta screwed for our color choices since everything has to have a base color of brown.
Really flashy colors like pink or green show up alright, but I so much wanted to do some silver and tinting it silver using /body just makes it a lighter shade of brown.

Ended up having to color it a very dark grey to get a desirable look.
