  • Item database has been expanded

Well, it seems Verant finally solved their issues with lack of space in their database and have increased its size considerably. Using Magelo, it's possible to see the internal item ID's, and the first items have started to appear that are in the 60.000 range. For what it seems, they doubled the database from approx. 32.500 items at first to approx. 65.000 items now.

Woot, more room for Tradeskill items. (And no wonder they increase bankspace with Ykesha! :P )

Good news, indeed. Part of the reason they were so hesitant about completing the cultural armor for every class was the fact that the database was so constricting and adding cultural armor would've meant they would have had to cut back considerably in other places.

Very nice, hopefully this means they'll add more stuff to the drop tables in PoP and more tradeskill items as well.

There a good number of items they could do away with. They have no use.

This has been discussed before. Removing seemingly useless items could break more than they broke in all of EQ's history so far. Also, it would require massive database work to filter it all out, for just a few hundred items really. While they need the room for thousands. Not just now, but for future expansions as well.

          Expanding was the right move.

What are the bets this is actually 32768 and 65536

              Maybe something like this happened:

a_newbie_dev_07: "Hey, can itemids be negative?"
a_guru_dev_02: "Uh, no that would be dumb"
a_newbie_dev_07: "So why are we using a signed type to hold 'em?"
              a_guru_dev_02: "We are?" <checks code> "DOH!"
              <later>
a_guru_dev_02 tells the_entire_dev_team, "Hey guys great news! I've found a real sneaky way to double the size of the item db!"
              a_newbie_dev_07: "But..."
              a_guru_dev_02: "Silence, n00b!"
              a_newbie_dev_07 sulks

I will agree, that if item number is stored in 2 bytes, then the maximum number would be 65536.

I think those are the two likely numbers indeed. And I had a good laugh there, EQNichola :P

                      LOL

Nich is obviously an expert Dilbert!

Hmm lack of space could explain those very annoying cases where imbued cultural items are the same as unimbued, perhaps that will be fixed now?

No, those Imbued and Unimbued pieces are definately uniquely different items in the database. It just happens to be so that item data strings only have 34 characters to store, at best. Maybe that has changed recently, but up until a short while ago 34 was the max. That's also why some item names are so wacky (especially dyed Fine Plate armor).
