  • 50+ research on test

as was reported today (yesterday) by adewale on test server, there are now merchants in toxx forest just north of the spires that sell recipe books for int caster spells. It appears several level 50-60 spells that were previously drop only are now researchable, including defoliate, sacrifice, convergance, dementia, and the level 55 enchie animation pet. The components for these spells are unfamiliar and are probably on the drop table or otherwise acquired on test only currently. Also, the merchants seem to respond differently based on the class of the one talking to them.
If and when these recipes go live, it should be a significant improvement for those of us who invested in their research skill.

Providing something like this goes live...

That's just fine and dandy for INT based casters...but what about WIS based casters? We have to put up with the same crappy spell drop system as everyone else. In all honesty, that sounds like a big "screw you" to priests and other WIS casters.

Granted, there may be other new NPCs that deal with the priest drop spells, but if there's not, then that's completely unfair.

I dunno; I've never played an int caster, but my cleric has never had to scrounge around for the components for potentially vital spells, so it's only fair that having to spend one's formative years doing research would pay off in some way.

Besides, it's not as though these spells are hard to come by anymore; I've already got most of my <55 dropped spells parked on a mule, just from finding them on vendors.

ROFLMAO. Cry my a river. Try not being able to get class-defining spells from level 16 to level 49. Every single WIS caster and hybrid spell from those levels can be bought on a vendor. You have absolutely no sympathy from me.

Mostly true. Some quest spells for a wis caster (ex being druid charm plant, which is also totally useless by the time you can get it).

Now try being a Shadowknight trying to get your upper level spells and finding out that they are research only necro spells. THAT is a bitch. Thankfully I'm friends with necromancers and didn't need to pay 2k for a research spell from the bazaar.

But, most spells 51+ turned into drop only status. Thus, if an int caster can do it, should make sense that there should be some way for the wis caster to do it (or us lowly sk's).

                You wait to rant please.

From a roleplay aspect, it doesn't make too much sense that WIS casters would be able to 'research' their spells. In addition, since WIS casters do not even get a research skill, it would also seem impractical and illogical to suddenly 'force' one upon them.

Should there be an alternate route to acquire WIS casters spells? In all fairness, yes. Since the original message posted only about merchants selling INT caster stuff in one location, how can you be sure the WIS caster equivalent is not somewhere else?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just pointing out that just because some people have it easy through guild contacts, etc., does not mean that all INT casters had everything handed to them on a silver platter. Personally, it took me until 51 until I finally completed my spellbook of 16-49 research spells. I did those blasted Concordance of Research quests innumerable times to raise skill, and finding pages was a lot of work and a lot of evenings going from zone to zone /auctioning for research pages that most people just destroy, combing vendors for the errant page that you might need, etc.

I believe all class get quest spells at some point. When Velious came out, there were also new sub-50 drop spells for most of the classes as well (for Enchanters, it's the level 39 Wandering Mind).

As far as SK's, don't all SK spells up to level 49 appear on vendors? I specifically remember that necros looking for certain research only pets and other spells would just go buy them off of SK vendors.

Personally, if WIS casters suddenly got the Research skill, one would hope that suddenly spells like Complete Heal, druid skins, Regeneration/Chloroplast, and the Tigir's/Tagar's/etc. line would all disappear from vendors and be research only.

                    This kinda sucks...

                    Also kinda doesn't...

I mean, research spells have been almost universally way cheap, I made my lvl 16, 20, and 24 ones, but didn't waste my time on the rest.

It is nice to have a decent reason to raise research, but I dread having 40 different runes (as I once had) taking up almost alll of my inventory.

Cub, you do know you can raise Research to 200 at guild trainer right? I don't know what else to use those extra 150 or so points I have, hehe, depending on their use, a lot will go to research.

Yeah, I have about 25 training points collecting dust. If this goes live, I'll probably put those into raising Research again.

Grrr. And just when I thought I'd never have to hold those blasted pages in my bags ever again. (I destroy them all these days...). Maybe we'll be lucky and they'll be "quest" recipes, i.e., no fail.

as for that lucy link, it definately looked like one of the pages for a 50-60 ench spell, probably either dementia or the 55 pet. Another possibility for wis casters without giving them research skill and containers would be to have those two guys in toxx give a quest series to each wis caster class for their spells. As i said, they respond differently to each class, and when i went there all i saw was them respond to "i am a bard" with "you are not what you claim to be" give or take some wording.
Anyway, I will do some more work on this now or after class, please refrain from flaming until the details are known (yeah right)

Hmm.. makes me wonder if they are bringing research back for the Legacy of Ykesha spells. Why nearly 2 1/2 years after Kunark's release would they suddenly make 50+ spells researchable. Nearly all 50-60 Kunark spells are worth less than 1kpp on my server excluding the really rare ones like Torpor.

My thoughts - NO SPELLS ON VENDORS EVER!!!

Yes, I like the idea of research. WIS and INT classes and all should have to earn the spells. EVEN level one spells. Drop spells should ALL be also quest and research based. The quests for rare research parts to make a spell.

This is EverQUEST and not EverVENDOR or EverCAMP.

While I am on this - More then one copy of a spell should be allowed in your spell book. This way you can set up pages for different types of fights and just load that whole page. The "Mem Page" buttons in the UI should be turned on - They are in the code but just disabled.

Last I heard, they might actually be working on this. Goodness knows it would be incredibly usefull... especially if you could memorize all 8 spells at once.
