    The wailing and shrieking substances aren't very rare. Just have to be killing the right mobs, which means manipulating the War to get either the owlbears or the wolves to take over the southern islands in Hollowshade. Only the wolves/owlbears on the islands and the southern shore drop the substances. Alternatively, you can get the shrieking substances in Tenebrous, and the wailing substances in Paludal, but they are much more easier to get in quantity off the southern islands in Hollowshade.

    I don't know what guide you found, but here are some links for more info on the Hollowshade war.

      I skilled up smithing before the cultural route was implemented and used a combo of acrylia, LDoN (was current at the time so lots of people had temper ingredients for sale), shadowscream, magnetic and mistletoe sickles (/mourn). I was lucky to pick up the smithing gloves on a raid so had a break for velium bits.
      If I had to start over, I would definately not go the same route. Farming greens is frustrating and demoralising. I must have spent months farming substances for shadowscream and manipulating the hollowshade war gets boring very quickly.
      My advise - farm what you can from mobs that give you exp, barter everything else. Tantalum and Vanadium studs seem a good way to go, while making armour with what you have farmed.
      One way to save money is getting salvage AA's, If you havent purchased already.
      Good luck, hope the RNG is kind to you.

        A couple items that may or may not be cheap on your server.
        Vanadium on my server can be bought in bulk for 5-10pp per combine. At 200 skill you'll fail alot but you cant sell the item anyway.

          You should try dulak harbor for some ore. The mobs in the are in the lev 40ish range and all are humanoids. You'll get ore, silks, pelts (which you could try trading for more ore) and cash! Not to mentions lots of gems

            Another route I have not seen discussed (and there are many options other than just for Smithing) is Sunshard Pebbles. They can be purchased (or /buyer) pretty cheap and is another reasonable route to get into the mid 200s. Sunshard Ore gets a bit more expensive, but is still an option to 300 as well.

              This is a cost cutting thread Gorse, did ya bother reading the whole thread? Sunshard Pebbel combines are used in Copper Infused Energaic Clay which is Pottery recipes OR Copper Conduit which is Tinkering or JC recipes, of which both have rather high vendor material costs for a skillup path. get your coffee first then read then post mmk?

                The objective of sunshard pebbles is not for tinkering or jewelcraft skill up path. Those are preliminary combines in smithing or tailoring. What Gorse was referring to was using pebbles towards those combines. And while they may have high vendor cost on parts, most of it is recovered by selling those final armors back to vendors. Most of the cost involved then is incurred upon failures (since you aren't able to sell the result back to a vendor).

                  True Mewkus but is not cost effective at 180pp+ for the ingot, a failure is a pretty hefty price to pay to be used as a skillup path, which is the heart of this thread cost effective skill ups. Even selling unused ingot back to the vendor will cost atleast 20pp, and, with a trivial of 210 for a sub-combine the chance for failure is still pretty high.

                  {snide comments are welcomed, be creative}

                    Note that if you have assistance of a tank class and an AOE class, it can also go very fast. Tank tags 40+ mobs, AE taunts, whatever for aggro...AOE class casts a few times...race to loot the mobs for drops before the poof.

                    Think I was getting 40-50 drops an hour? Yes, it took awhile, but not as bad as my necro friend killing Othmir in Velious for tailoring.
