It's been quite a while since the old vendor diving went away. I'm pretty sure I never saw it, and I started playing in late 2003. Still, I've read the old FAQ on it so I understand how it used to work.
There's still a lot you can do, "seeding" merchants with items so that one of their 80 slots will be reserved for that item (as long as nobody else buys all of that item). And therefore the corollary: try to resist buying the last one of a tradeskill item; leave one to hold the slot in case more get sold there. Especially if the merchant seems to be full. (After a while you can learn to tell from the size of the scroll bar.)
