  • Is Salvage worth getting to help with skill ups?

    Hey guys

I'm currently working on my research skill (243) and was wondering if it's worth to train Salvage now or wait until I'm a higher skill level?

Any tips or advice would be very helpful.

    Thanks!

Yes. It is possible you recover the farmed component to recipes once there is no vendor path and get extra chances to click combine. Its not going to make a huge a difference, however.

If you are doing several combines where you are expecting 0 plat back, you might choose to wait on salvage. I would still recommend getting it if you intend to attempt high trivial combines or combines with rare(ish) components. I used to like that I could get even stacks of components and just knew when I was done, I would have nothing left. Now with salvage, if I do a run, I end up with a few odds and ends left over. Sometimes, you salvage enough across multiple failures to actually get another entire attempt which could be helpful when skilling up. I would recommend getting it as it will help in the long run to have too.

I found that skilling up a skill with salvage did result in additional combine attempts. I never sat down and tried to calculate exactly how many more I got, but believe it was somewhere above 2%. It will vary, and I usually only paid attention when I was doing a 100 combine run. I think the best I did was 105 attempts when I only had materials for 100.

          Salvage for mony, not skill

Don't buy Salvage just for skill-ups. Buy it if you need to keep your costs low. My Druid bought salvage when he started making PoR jewelry; which was expensive to me. My SK bought Salvage to make his Elegant Armor and Porous Loam was going for 150kpp. My Researcher and Tinker still have not bought Salvage.

As others said, don't get it unless you're skilling up on rare or expensive items, especially if you are using vendor purchased stuff.

I have skilled up on some things with salvage already purchased and to be honest the uneven stacks drove me nuts.

I guess my thinking is that, if you are raising a skill to 300, you are probably doing it because you intend to make items at the high end. So salvage would be good to get at some point. When you consider the high cost involved in making the high triv items to get a skill to 300, again, having salvage makes sense.

Taking everything into account, the high cost of materials, the amount of time spent farming stuff if you dont want to buy it, the fact that having salvage can result in additional skill up attempts, the fact that salvage works on all the tradeskills etc., I would suggest training it early on.

There's an implicit trade-off here, as with so much of EQ. How quickly can you get 15AA to max out salvage? How quickly can you get an extra 10-15% supplies for skilling up? If your sole focus is to get on 300, and you never plan to tradeskill again, that's the core trade-off.

On the other hand, if you plan to continue tradeskilling after you ding 300, salvage becomes a lot more valuable. It will pay for itself the first time you salvage a rare 100Kpp item. I don't know of many people who can earn 100Kpp in the same time as they could earn 15AA. (A few maybe, but those sorts of folks tend to not have trouble getting either cash or AA. )
