  • How hard would it be...

...to change the message when you fail a combine that is now trivial to you to something like "You have blown the attempt" instead of "You lacked the skills to combine these items".

I don't really lack the skills, I just botched it by not paying attention.

I know this is a silly detail...but it bothers me when I am trying to finish out brewing (282 and trudging) and get told that I "lacked the skill" to make soda water

I feel the same way real trivial thing in the grand sceeme of things but always seemed funny that an item is trivial yet the message says You lack the skill to make that item. No I do not lack the skill I just was not sucessful.

Well... it is a code change, and ANY code change no matter how small has a certain level of difficulty. And currently the code does not check the trivial when it gives the message... it just gives a message when you fail... no matter how (the other messages you get are "pre" fail)

it cant be that hard unless i misunderstand the request... there are text/spelling fixes all the time, what would be different here?

are we asking for differing messages for skill lacking or just a plain fail, or are we asking for the current message to just say you failed? if we are just changing the current message, that shouldnt be hard i wouldnt think.

The OP is asking that the message be different on a failure of a trivial combine than it is on a combine that isn't trivial, at least in my interpretation. The problem isn't changing the message, but the fact that when you fail, it currently doesn't check the trivial before giving you the message.

"You lacked the skill" is not a bad message. Descriptive, without being a put-down to the player.

"You blew it" would probably work better, however, though it is a little bit more insulting.

Personally, while I think that "you lacked the skill" really isn't accurate for combines that are trivial, or even close to trivial, I can't think of any really easy-to-implement flavor text that would work better as a "failed" message - and I really don't see any need to seperate out failure on recipes above from recipes at or below the character's skill level to give them a different message.

Text and spell is actually DATA that we can change. It also shows in a predictable spot. code triggers the text at particular times during its process.

The same is true for this, EXCEPT as I said when you FAIL... no matter how... it makes a call to a specific bit of text. If I change that text (which I can) it would also change the text on a fail when it is above your skill.

Currently the code does NOT make any differentiation on what your skill vs the combine difficulty is when you fail, it is just one message. Code would have to be changed to call two different bits of text, instead of the single bit of text it calls currently. And Code changes are "hard" compared to data changes. This is of course relative. I expect that this would be a reasonably trivial change for code to make, but it still has to be made by code, and code changes take a while and have to be prioritized. There are other minor code changes that I would consider FAR more important than this change.
