I keep running across all of the elements and stuff, such as ores and loams. Are they for making augments? And what is all the new items(pelts, ores, etc) in the tutorial for? Please help a noob out and point me in the right direction. Thanks! tt

Tailoring and Smithing for cultural armors received a revamp back before SoF went live.
They now require you to make a template from ore (for smithing) or silk or leather (for tailoring). Then, a rarer dropped item, the loam (for smithing) and spinneret fluid and marrow (for tailoring) is used only in the final armor combines and in the symbol combines.
Look around in the tradeskill guide section and there should still be some writeups about the cultural armor and the templates.
The idea, was to balance the availability of the cultural armor among the races/classes and to provide a smooth skill up path all the way to 300+.Shawlweaver Sphynx on Cazic Thule

Additionally, most if not all of the armor/symbol recipes cannot be learned except in a special way. It used to be that you learned a new recipe in experiment mode of a tradeskill container on a successful combine. After the successful combine.
With the new armor/symbol recipes you need to purchase books, scrolls, etc. from a the vendors in the cubby left of the entrance to the Library in the PoK. When you read the "recipe books" there will be a scribe button, which when pressed will auto-learn the recipes for you. There are books for the Armor Templates, the Armor and the Symbols. Which books that are available for purchase are dependent on you skill level. As you skill up, more books become available. This is just to learn the recipes.
There are quests that you are required to perform in order to make the armor and symbols. There are no quests required to make the templates. These quests are offered in your Home City. Each race will have one or more quests givers (humans have two, one in Qeynos, one in Freeport. Dark Elves have one in Neriak. etc.) These quests result in a book that can be used to make the molds/patterns to smith/tailor the armor (using the templates). Other quests (given by the same NPC) will result in a books that can be used to create the patterns needed to make the symbols. There is one quest (and resulting book) for each level of symbol.

This brings up a question I've been wondering about. One of my characters is a warrior, so when she did the quests, she got molds to smith for her armor. But, she's a decent tailor and would like to be able to make cultural robes for others to wear. Is this possible?Originally posted by gggrant View PostThere are quests that you are required to perform in order to make the armor and symbols. There are no quests required to make the templates. Yes, the combine is different for smithing and tailoring, but uses the same Ancestral Book. For tailoring you will also need a cultural sewing kit and needle.Originally posted by Akenta View PostThis brings up a question I've been wondering about. Smithing *snip* combine the book with a huge block of clay, a compacted backpack, sculpting tools, and a high quality firing sheet in a kiln *snip* makes you molds.
Tailoring *snip* Combine the book with a compacted backpack, large bottle of ink, quill, and roll of plain parchment in a book binding. *snip* makes you patterns. You'll use these in your cultural sewing kit with your cultural needle. (The kit will tokenize /praise)
You'll wear out your book faster, but the Ancestral Book isn't the tough quest anyway
Cheers!Last edited by EloMist; 01-23-2008, 08:59 AM.Mouse breaking crew --
