They're in place for future expansion. If Ngreth ever decides to add new tiers of armor, or move existing types of armor to the standardized system, then the infrastructure will already be in place.
Having said that, Ngreth has also said he'll consider whether to remove the drops that have no use, but he hasn't decided either way yet.Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

Well, not critiziing what was done. Basically it's because bazaar vendors that are clueless about what drops are for cultural cluter up my search window.
That being said, lots of baz vendors still have old research and cultural stuff up also.

I did remove the tradeskill flag. I have not yet removed the drops.
