I know for the quested books to make cultural symbol patterns, there is a book for elaborate, and another book for intricate, etc. And these books do "wear out" (poof) after 10 uses. But what about the other book to make cultural armor patterns and molds? Does it ever wear out? Or does it last forever?

The armor books also wear out after ten uses, but those are much easier to re-obtain, just by repeating the quest.
Also note that the armor books aren't lore. You can collect multiples of the drops you need (if they're not lore, of course) and hand in one set at a time to get multiple books in one farming session.Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

Be careful doing that...Originally posted by KyrosKrane View Post

The script that the books run from can bite you. It is just ONE flag on your character per book TYPE... 1 for armor 1 for 20 symbol 1 for 40 symbol 1 for 60 symbol... etc.... it is NOT stored on the book itself but on your character... so say you use a book 9 times and delete it... get another book and use it, it will poof on that first use because it is the 10th count that the stored variable sees. Our game does not have a good concept of an individual item instance so I do not have a way to track a specific individual book.
You can still do what he is saying, but be careful and don't delete any books yourself, let the script do it.
I plan to make a major change after SoF launch, that should help.

Ooh, good point. I never thought of that.
So right now, let's say I make a new character and go collect two sets of drops. I hand in both sets, so I have two books.
I use 10 combines on the first book. The script deletes the book. Some time after that, without re-doing the quest, I want to do another book combine using the second book. How many combines will I get with this book? Just 1, or the full 10?Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

It remember for my tinkerer, I went a collected 2 sets of the drops. I stored the 4 items in the bank and when my book runs out I can easily just hand in the 4 items to get the new book. No need to risk having 2 books that could destroy the wrong one on accident.Shawlweaver Sphynx on Cazic Thule

the script currently looks for a "0" in that variable (it gets a zero also if it has not been initialized at all) if it finds a zero, it sets it to 10 (well 9) and you get to start over and get 10 combines.Originally posted by KyrosKrane View PostOoh, good point. I never thought of that.

Ah, very nice, thank you.
One interesting side effect is that if you have more than one of the same book, it doesn't matter which you use to do your combines. Since the charges aren't tied to the physical book, you won't get to a point where, say, one book has seven charges left and another has three. Instead, you just use up one book, then get a fresh ten charges with the next.Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

Yup. it just "looks" weird if you are somehow keeping track on a per book basisOriginally posted by KyrosKrane View PostAh, very nice, thank you.

I am soo confused I did the book quest with my halfling druid and got the Ancient Halfling book and did the combine to get what I thought were the patterns, but they came out as symbol patterns, is this right or is there another book quest I need to do. I thought the old DON Cultural was confusing this has my head spinning.

Stokker, there are two types of quests for the books. If the quest you had was in your task window, it was the quest for the symbols. There's four of those quests, for the Blessed, Sacred, Revered, and Eminent symbols.
The quest to get the book for the armors is an old-style quest. In the NPC text, he'll tell you to bring him four items. You just hand him all four at once, and he'll give you the book for the armors. The items he asks for are usually common drops off the low-level zones near your home city.
All the tiers of armor use the same book, so you can do the quest once and get a book that works for all levels of armor.Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

The book I had was from before the change in cultural, I just have not played this toon in quite a while and what I got was to make these, which are symbols. Do I need to run the quest again for a new book?Originally posted by KyrosKrane View PostStokker, there are two types of quests for the books. The books named "Ancestral (race) Armor" are for making armors. This one book can be used to make all tiers of armor.
The ones named "Blessed / Revered / Sacred / Eminent Book of (race) Culture" are for making the symbols, the type 11 augs that fit in the cultural armors. Each tier of symbol needs its own book, indicated in the name of the book. So a "Blessed Book of Vah Shir Culture" would make Blessed augs for a Vah Shir crafter.Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

Ok I am going back to Rivervale and try again he gives two quests and I guess I need the other one, not the one where you gather 4 items cause that is the one that got me this book. Unless I stumbled upon an unknown bug...ish...Strokker~Fennin Ro

Ancestral Book of... is the one from the collect 4 items, and should produce Pattern or Mold for [race specific] [armor item]. The other books mentioned, result of longer quests and beginning with Blessed, Revered, Sacred or Eminent should produce symbol patterns for the 4 levels of symbols.Originally posted by Strokker View PostOk I am going back to Rivervale and try again he gives two quests and I guess I need the other one, not the one where you gather 4 items cause that is the one that got me this book. They are the same books. The quests to get the symbol pattern books were changed a while back but still result in the same final reward. You do not need to redo any quest if you already have the book.Roanne LeFaye
