Gnomish Eminent Symbol Quest: A Question

I found the mobs (a strong sentinel) and have gotten credit for the kills (just a few so far).

Part of the quest says to make impressions from their bracers. Do I actually have to do anything or will something drop (randomly) from the kills giving me an update. I thought I read somewhere that I had to have something in my bags as a "check" to get credit for the drop.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You just need to have the book that the NPC gave you and it will get "updated" you'll get the impressions on it i believe

Impressions just "happen". It's kind of like a random drop. When you kill and loot one of the quest creatures, you may get a message saying that something about the creature made an impression on you or some such jibber jabber and your quest log will then be updated. It's a passive thing.
