  • possible dupe bug? Spell: Flare

Has anyone else noticed huge quantities of the "Spell: Flare" on merchants lately? It seems a long shot as a dupe: it's next to worthless, it's not made via tradeskills (at least according to this site), and it still sells back for less than its purchase price. However, I'm seeing huge quantities all over the place, reminiscent of the recent gem dupe... 400+ on one merchant, 100+ on the merchant next to him, and more than a few copies scattered all over. Anyone else seeing this?

Edit: I knew it was a low-level mage spell, but I just realized it was a lvl 1 spell. Is it one of the ones a new mage would get automatically on creation?

you also get it as a reward for a low level quest(think bone chip turn in inside felwithe cleric guild).

The Spell: Flare, as well as being sold by NPCs, is a quest reward.

Since bat wings can be bought in unlimited quantities in PoK and a coupel of other places, it's probably someone levelling up a twink with quest xp (works well up to ~level 10 or so, but the toon has NO casting or melee skills, lol) ...

      ...or...

someone is trying to increase or repair their faction.

Yes, I can almost guarantee that large collection of spells is from someone turning in the bat wings quest.

I spent a year in the other side of the planet (the real planet) from my normal guild mates which means I had to find things to do that didn't include raiding. I chose the goal of maxing all possible "good" factions, and some evil ones. I must have turned hundreds of thousands of bone chips in to quest givers across Norrath (and even Kunark) on my path to glory.

That spell didn't sell to merchants for much at all, but I was cheap and wanted a slight return on my bone chip purchases from the bazaar. I'm certain the spells you've noticed have come from someone either doing faction or putting experience onto a new character.

This is not entirely true any longer. Any time a new skill / ability becomes available to a character, they automatically get 1 point in that skill.

Also, I have heard this arguement about spell casters (being power level) for years, but it really does not take long (less than 30 minutes) to run a spell casting skill from 1 to 95% of max (I say 95% becuase sometimes the last few points come slowly, rarely, but sometimes).

Especially now with the ability to be in rest mode on a mount, you can chain cast spells even without mana regen on.

Melee skills like spell casting skill increase very quickly when they are used, so again, the arguement is moot.
