There's something inherently wrong with using tokens in a combine. Remember that the token isn't some compressed or collapsible form of the backpack; rather it's just a claim check that Caerlyna gives you. It's approximately the equivalent of saying that if you check a white mink coat at your favorite ritzy restaurant, then spill some blue ink on the claim check, you expect to get a blue mink coat back.

The recipes have to interact with either the bag itself or a collapsed/compressed/shrunk/something representation of the bag.

I know the white bag icon is used in one of the quest rewards from Icefall. one of the food quests for the orcs has a 10 slot, giant bag with 75% WR and is white.

That's a problem however, since containers cannot be combined in other containers. Perhaps the dye would have to be applied to the pelt before it is used to make the bag. Alternatively just make the final combine a quest turn in. Hand an NPC a bag and the dye and whatever else the quest requires and you get back a dyed bag.

I like the idea of dying the pelts, but wouldn't that then require dyed pelt icons too? < evil grin >

HQ Bear Skin + Backpack Pattern + Dye of given color = Hand Made Backpack of given color

            Just an idea...

White bag is from a task from Goreman near the kobold caves, killing bears in IG.

Grey bag is from Gorbuk in the orc fort, I had to sneak to do the task.

Hand made backpack has limitations for storage (capacity large), which is why I don't use them for anything - including bank storage.

id personally prefer just being able to turn a dye/paint type substance + an empty bag into an NPC and recieve a colored version of that bag..
me being a monk and carrying around multiple Leatherfoot bags etc ..
its a pain when they get mixed up (every once in a while ill get my inv straight and have 1 bag for food, 1 bag for potions etc.. and they will be in a certain order .. they get mixed up due to lag while looting and when a spot opens they fill up with junk hehe)

i stopped using Handmade backpacks a long time ago myself =/

A little off topic, I know but....

Anybody happen to know if there is a similar quest to Gorman's for the same reward (I hear it's 90% wt reduction)? I'm a High Elf wizard and he will not talk to me - tells me I'm slime

                      Thanks for any help!!

You can actually work up orc faction by killing Kobolds, or vice versa. I believe the intent is to go with one faction.

Just make it for tradeskill combines only and add the dye's in. That way it doesn't really change the combine unless you want the particular colour, in which case it's just an addition of one (or two) components but with the same combine skill, etc...

couldn't this also be accomplished just by someone with xml knowledge modifying the ui files? (not that tradeskillers like to do things the easy way mind you)

I believe that the item icons are part of the game data and not the UI files.
