    no code changes!

    I will think of something.

off the top of my head I think there are more colors than the armor dyes... but I will look into it

it may in the beginning be more "handmade backpack" recipes with colors... or some-such, ans I will reserve the other bag type for something else. I will see

There are only seven colors of extracts (ingredients for the dyes), although maybe with a lightener ingredient or combining more than one, they could be made to work. Or there are 17 dyes, which would have to be combined to get some of those colors (like purple - red plus blue?) but could surely cover them. There are black extracts and dyes, too, although no white. Something slightly different would be needed for white, maybe with the more recent caustic substances available? The recipes can be found here (for brevity I lopped off the smithing recipes in that url).

        idea:

-add a recipe for an undyed bag that has a combine button.
-combine the dye of your choice (plus ligtener if necessary) in this bag, and voila, new colored bag (with no combine button)

idea 2, less tradeskillish since it involves a hand in:

-hand a handmade backpack to an NPC with a dye vial, and get back a colored bag

But what of the original bag?

There are lots of recipes that consume the container that they are combined in. For instance, the pattern recipes for DoN cultural armor.

There's also the Compacted Backpack used to make the DoN patterns.

Compacted Backpack + dye = basic colored bag.
Compacted Backpack + (weight reducing agent of some sort) + dye = weight reducing colored bag.

I would prefer to see new recipes. HQ hide + backpack pattern + xxx dye yeilds an xxx colored backpack.

Perhaps throw in some silk thread, since it would be nice to be able to hold everything together.

If you turn the original un-colored bag in for a token, the token could then be used in a tradeskill combine. The product could be either a colored bag token, or the colored bag itself.

Excellent! Handmade backpacks are quick and easy to make, all we'd need are some dyes and some recipes to apply them to the backpacks.

Hmmm ... maybe if you had the recipe work on handmade backpack TOKENS, eh? You could combine them in, say, an alchemy bag, or a mortor and pestle, or perhaps just in a sewing kit. That way you wouldn't have to figure out how to make a recipe to work on a container. Then you turn in the green handmade backpack token and the quest NPC gives you a green bag.

Alternatively you could have a new quest where you hand an undyed handmade backpack and a dye to an NPC (along with some coin or "other consideration", perhaps) and they hand you back your dyed backpack. You could also have a quest to hand a bleach solution and a dyed backpack to the NPC to get back an undyed backpack.

If you want a source of dyes, there's some that were used to dye the old fine plate armor, and I suspect you could either reuse some of those and add a few more to fill in the extra colors needed. There's plenty of things that could be used to make dyes already, and many of them already have tradeskill tags on them.

Here's a possible idea. Let's look at yellow dyes for the yellow bag. As it happens there's already a Yellow Dye in the game --> Yellow Dye Recipe

You might want to vary the recipe a bit. Use the same Jack-o-lantern Extract as the base, but combine it with something other than the Resin to make the dye for the leather bag. (Perhaps Gnomish Spirits or something made with brewing, alchemy or make poision skills? Just a thought.)

So all that is needed for the other dyes are the other extracts. There's already a few you could call upon that were used for the old fine plate dye recipes. A few more extracts for colors not already covered and you're covered.

You could reserve the colored alternative bag graphics for a dyed set of some sort of exotic weight reduction bags (Leatherfoot Haversacks?) and work them out later.

Not sure I like basing dyed bags off of HM backpacks since they only hold large items. While nearly everything in my bank would fit in it, having to keep giant sized items in a separate bag would kind of remove a lot of the organizational utility for me.
