  • What's it worth?

Ok, I've been pondering this for some time. Exactly what is the value in Begging? I've never used the 'skill', and I'm curious as to what it accomplishes, if anything, for your character.
Also, exactly who do you use begging on - PCs or NPCs? If NPCs, then which NPCs does the skill work on?
What does begging garner? Is it coin, or do you sometimes get an item?
    Thanks

Usually when begging low level creatures in newbie zones, I tend to get Blue Diamonds.

I once begged a 10-slot bag from a guard in freeport.

Is this true, or do you need to return my leg after such a hard pull?

          Mine was complete bullarky...

Lilosh was more subtle, saying once and an item that isn't "uber"... but I think his was also balderdash.

Kinda a dead horse subject, as we have all seen it before. I've never really begged, so I don't know exactly what you get.

Just one blue diamond at a time for you? I usually get a stack or two.

              Begging - The real deal

Begging from guards and/or vendors sometimes gets you a copper. Once I got a silver from a guard in Freeport.

Begging generates agro which is why you can get attacked (and usually killed) by guards and vendors. This really seems to happen much more often when you are level 5 then when you are level 45.

Based on the evidence that begging creates agro, some folks use it to 'add' agro when attacking mobs. They do this by turning off attack, pressing beg, then turning attack back on. There not a whole lot of evidence that this is really worth the trouble, even if it is hot keyed.

There is some evidence that as begging gets higher it generates less agro, but this has not been proven. Folks tend to notice that as their begging level goes up it becomes much harder for them to get attacked by guards and vendors.

Things you can beg from today for skillups: Vendors, Guards, Mobs, Scions.

Things you used to be able to beg from for skillups but no longer can: Ships, Pets (??? 90% sure on no skillups from pets anymore).

ok, same question, but replace begging with alcohol tolerance. Why bother?

AT was used by tanks once upon a time as a cheap way to boost thier STR and hitpoints and there are some smiths who swear that the best way to smith is while blind drunk.

Otherwise maxing one's AT is just for shoots and giggles.

I use AT for one thing; Mana regen. With 200 AT I can drink 5 or so beers and fall from 135ish to 120. That lowers your total mana poll and you regen that faster. But that the same time you get your WIS back in just over 1 minute so even when you are close to 100% mana you have more WIS to add to the poll, I, personally, think it works fine for me.

P.S. Cigarskunk, I have been meaning to say, I LOVE your new sig! Just one question, what kind of cigar is it!?

                      Hey, no bashing Alcohol Tolerance!

No better way to impress newbies than to guzzle down two stacks of booze and then talk in funny language while wobbling about.

You do know that you are slowing down your mana regen by doing this right? Just because your mana pool is smaller does not mean that you get it back faster. You still regen at the same rate as when you are not drunk, but once you get back to 100% mana you only regen the rest of your mana pool as fast as your wis/int goes back up.

No matter how much mana you have or how drunk you get, you still end up having to regen the same amount of mana.

                            Are you sure about that?

Do a test... start naked with 100% mana.

Put on a bunch of INT items and Mana boosting items.

How much mana do you have?

100%? Hmmm... what does this suggest?

                            Lets put it this way...

When drunk your mana pool is down to 500 mana, every 50 mana you regen is 10%.

As alcohol effects wear off, your mana pool is up to 1000, now technically 50 mana is 5%, but if you had filled up at the better percentage... then you came out on top, and much faster.

I encourage you not to take my word for it, but to test it out.

Easiest way: Start at 0 mana, time to 100%.

Go to zero mana again, slam a few down, regen while recovering, and time it again....

                              Mana Pool

                              Delphontes,

I am afraid you are incorrect.

If the mana items acted like hp items and increased both your max and current level by the amount then you would be right. However while a 50 hp item will increase you currect hps and max hps by 50, a 50 mana item only increases your max mana not your current mana.

I know this from experience. I gave my level 9 ranger a pair of Darkmail glauntlets, which have 50 mana on them, his mana bar dropped my around 2 blue bubbles and I would have to regen it back. When I got back up to full mana if I removed and replaced the Dark Mail my mana bar would drop 2 bubbles again.

Easiest test is to take a Rokyls Channeling Crystal or Veks Spellbook and hand them to a level 1 caster. You will find that they will drop to like one blue bubble or less.
