  • Does this still stand?

Q: If my skill is 250, would one of these geerlock tools make my skill 262?
A: No, modified skills are capped at 252. In fact, once your skill reaches 240, any skill ups that you get would be meaningless since your skill will be capped at 252.
now that with PoP, the one-byte integer has been broken, do we have a confirmation that, even though the displayed skill is 250, there is no further increase of the max modified skill, still at 252?

in other terms, do we have a post-PoP survey of success rates at 250 skill with and without geerlok (or any other skill modifier item)?

... has this been asked before ?

Who said the one byte integer had been broken? For stats, sure. But I haven't heard anything about a skill being higher than 255

      you said it )

for stats, it has been broken
for (displayed) skills, it has not (max is 252 (meditation), and for trade skills, 250)

what do we know about (hidden) skills? after all, this 252 is NOT displayed, so, do we know for sure it still stands?

I think it has not, for I believe 253, 254 and 255 are special figures bearing a different meaning (255 is a good candidate for fail safe for example), but this is just guessing.

The reason skills were capped at 252 prior to PoP were that they were stored in a single byte in the character record. And the values over that were reserved for special codes for some of the skills.

However internal calculations done with the geerlok doesn't have that single byte restraint. Actually it's less efficient to work with single bytes on modern processors.

So the intial cap at 250 was an arbitrary number chosen by the designers as they had the 252 limit. And the same happened when they implemented the geerloks. They just picked a number for the modified cap but this time they had no limit. They could just as well have set it at 275, but statistical evidence so far seems to exclude anything above 255. Any semi-official statements about the 252 cap might just have referred to the skill cap on character storage, and not the modified cap.

Which leaves us still arguing whether it's 250, 252 or 255.

Personally at 250 skilling smithing with 15% skill mod item I have seen nothing to indicate that anything has changed. I still get the same success rates I'm used to on thing like cultural armor and sickles from before I had the 15% skill mod. One would expect that 287 skill vs 250 skill would have a noticable effect on the success rate of those recipes.

Well what about class specific AAs? Chanters have advanced jewelry or something along that line that allows decreased failure by 10, 25 and 50%. Havent checked, but am pretty sure other classes have same thing (alchemy for shammies etc). How is this computed?

The last Fan Faire was after PoP launch, and they said that 252 was the cap for tradeskills, with use of a +tradeskill item.

I have yet to hear any answer on how the AAs are computed, etc.
