  • Why Can't Forges Be Shared?

With all of the technological progress EQ has made since 1999........how come only one player at a time can use a Forge??
I was the only player in Rivervale and I was using the Forge, left for 30 seconds to buy items, and then the Forge was taken over. I know I could find another one, but this was convenient.
I bet the Forge in POK is used 24/7.
Why can't multiple players use a Forge? Is it due to a technical part of the game, or is it a roleplay issue?

Actually there are 5 forges in PoK to offset this from happening, but I see your point. I think the reason only one person per forge is the same reason one person can use any other item. It just doesn't make good RPing sense for 20 people to be able to mold armor in one fire.

Not to mention that they would basically be accessing the same container at the same time. Personally I don't think people should be using the same forge at the same time. That being said I do with there were a few more in certain places :P

But look at the size of the containers in the Guild Hall, I'm certain more than one person could use one of those at the same time (in an RPing sense).

If not, then the containers are not as efficient as they should be / way oversized....

Unfortunately, some combines cannot be done in Guild Hall and need to be done in PoK. This makes no sense to me.

Not that the original post was specific to PoK forge, the problem was with a forge in RV. PoK forge was mentioned, and yes, there are many more in PoK than RV....but back in PoPs prime, the PoK forges were difficult to get at times. Same with the other containers in PoK, some still have that problem (brew barrels and pottery wheels).

I am fully aware that some combines can not be done in the GH and need to be done in PoK, just as there are combines that can't be done in PoK and must be done in a racial forge.... It was a joke. Read:

It might be a code issue (adding a global object for each opened "forge" or other world container, then removing it when it's closed might be unfriendly to memory or something)

It might be an "exploit potential" issue (like trading no drop stuff by putting it in a forge, though that's been long fixed)

But most likely it's just a RP / design issue. They decided long ago that one world container could be used by one person at a time.

I dunno which side I'd come down on... fewer requests to share the brew barrel / forge in some zones. (I tradeskill in Rivervale as well) Or the idea that some role play aspects should be preserved in a MMORPG like EQ.
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

I'd think that the fact that they are containers is the biggest reason that only one person can use the forge, loom, brew barrel, etc. at a time. Remember, anything you leave in there is not gone unless its no drop. So if you place a file in the forge, and forget about it when you leave, someone else can come along and take that file, or you can go back and pick it up. Kinda hard to do smithing (brewing, etc) when other people are able to grab your materials hehe.

Negative, they changed that. If you close out the forge window it will return to you everything you had in it before actually disengaging you from the forge.

Unless it varies by server, there's only two in the bigger room and one in the south room.

I do not know the original reason.

The current reason is that it is an actuall container shared by everyone, so only one person can be in a container at once.

It is something wer have considered making a code change for, but at this time we have given other code changes a higher priority.

When we do change it, one truly will for sure not be able to leave things in the container. (I could have sworn I left a file in one the other day and it stayed there... I think the "return" mentioned is for ND stuff... or I am just remembering incorrectly...)

Well, if "the other day" was a few years ago, it's possible. They changed this a long time ago. Works with ND and droppable alike.
