  • Do the "Mastery" AA's help with skill-ups?

(Apologies if this is a FAQ, but I did search and I can't see an answer).

The skill-up formula gives a double chance of a skill-up on a success as on a failure -- but does this actually include those ones where you succeed because you have the requisite AA?

I would think so. A success is a success, no matter what the reason.

If you are doing combines that are well above your current skill then yes it will help. Mastery AA will not cut into the success cap though, so if you are skilling up on a recipe where you are already getting 95% success then it won't help.

If you are budgeting limited AA points hoping for an edge in skilling up, I would suggest Salvage.

Salvage returns some components on failed combined. Returned components means a few extra attemtps, and extra attempts mean more skillups.

Mastery AAs give a higher chance of success, but as mentioned before, will not take you past any capped success levels. Since most people skill up on items that are close to trivial (to increase success rate) you will not see much improvement from the Mastery AA once your skills are high enough that the combines start to be harder to come by.

Actually, I was considering whether it was worth buying Fletching Mastery 3 prior to skilling from 202 to 300 on Mithril Champion arrows. Plugging the 50% fail reduction in to my spreadsheet shows a saving of about 3kpp in cash and about 200 combines (out of 34.5kpp/2.2k combines) so I won't bother for this one.
