  • Starting a new skill

Most guides advise you to put 21 skill points in when starting a new skill.

Well this seems kinda dumb to me. When you start a new skill the first 20 levels are usually quite trivial and you can do them in an hour or so for a less than 10 plat.

As you can only put 21 skill points in why not hold off till your trade skill is high and skilling up is really painful and/or very expensive?

Another tip. Geerlocks and trophy's add 5% to your skill. So you do not need to exceed level 240 because 240 + 5% = 252 which is the max value a trade skill can be.

Combining the above - you only need to get your trade skill to 220

I fyou try to put points into a skill that high, you will get a response from your trainer that says you must learn advance skills in the field or something to that effect.
hehe I think most people have tried that at one time or another. I wish it did work though. I could jump my smithing up real quick.

      Hi Biabeli

While it would be nice if these things worked that way, unfortunately they don't.

You can't put 21 Training Points (TPs) into a tradeskill at any skill level (say I'm at 100 baking, I cannot spend 21 TPs at my guild trainer to get to 121 Baking.) Most of the Tradeskills are such that you can only put in TPs from skill level 1-21. After your 21st point you will have to skill-up by combining. (There's a couple of exceptions - you can use TPs + plat at any point to raise Poison-Making or Fishing).

The other error you have made is that tradeskill mod items do not stack. So having a trophy with 5% and a geerlock of same skill with 5% does NOT equal 10% modifier to your skill. (We wish it did, but it don't.)

Sorry to disappoint you but I hope that the above helps clarify things otherwise another Tradeskill newbie might mistake your post for accurate information.

        Just a picky note:

She said 240 + 5% not 240 + 10%, so she didn't assume they stack in her math. Thanks for shopping at Healblade's Corrections Corrections!

Pretty sure that means she thought they would stack

Nope, she was wrong, but wrong differently.

She thought at 220 you could train at guild to 240, then you would be GM with the 5%. She never implied that she thought you could stack modifiers, but that may not mean she doesn't think they stack, just didn't come up in this post.

Off the topic... I have removed the ofending text as they were all made at about the same time. I am counting it as one offense and just giving a warning to the person. I have also removed all references to it.

oops, I think you are right delfontes, I misinterpreted that comment as a belief that the trophy and geerlock stacked...sorry biabeli ops:

however, you still can't train 21 points at any time in your skill path...only at the beinning (ie skill 1-21) for most tradeskills, I got that one right at least
