  • Do Smithies still use shrieking and wailing substances?

Do smithies still use shrieking and wailing substances from Owlbears and Sonic wolves while skill grinding (trivials at 168) ?

Just wondering if it'd be worth farming and selling for pp while stuff in HSM is blue-red to me. (FV server)

Yes, these are used to make Shadowscream Steel armor which many folks still use in their skillup paths.

The issues is that the substances are No Trade. If you wanted to try to sell the fruits of your labor, you would have to make them into Humming Orbs. This requires a smithing combine at a trivial of around 169. The resulting orbs do not stack.

Could be a tough market to develop.

If the humming orbs were stackable you could sell also them as a stack of single charge damage shield items, course the shamans selling ds potions might not be happy about that.

There has been a steady market for these on FV, so the answer is, "Yes. If you're getting XP in Hollowshade, go there and farm substances." Most of the smiths I know despised having to farm Hollowshade, and more than a few were willing to pay handsomely for large quantities of substance.

Contact me if you have some to sell. Yes, people do buy them, I have searched many days in the bazaar.

I've both bought and sold a fair share in the bazaar myself, just deleted all the vah shir smithing tools this week as I finally admitted that I'm gonna farm Cazic for Tae Ew combines instead of Shadow Scream. That and my skill pretty much indicated it was time to move on from shadow scream anyway. Needed the bank space.

Please god add tool belts, even if via aa's.

Trivial is a lot higher --

The trivial for Shadowscream armor is as high as 267.

The Humming Orbs are not no drop and can be sold/traded. Problem is -- they don't stack. If they did -- I am sure they would be very high demand items -- not for their effect -- but for the skilling.

This is the path I have been using -- but it is VERY slow going. You have to control the Hollowshade war for one, as the substances only drop while the right MOB's (Owlbears or Sonic Wolves) are in control of the south islands.

On top of that -- you also need to farm Swirling Shadows.

On top of that you have to make metal rings.

Then -- when making the orbs and armor -- the orbs don't stack, the bricks dont stack, the molds dont stack and so the number of combines you can make at a time are limited -- forcing you to run back and forth for selling and restocking.

Its a pain in the butt, for sure. Last go round I did this, I got 1 skill up in 32 combines.

I was doing Shadowscream Armor for a while and pulling my hair out at how SLOW it was going. Was taking me forever to farm the substances and the stuff from Twilight Sea. Then I heard about the Velium changes and making Enchanted Velium Bits.

Switched to EVBs and maxxed to 200 in a couple of days. Forget the Shadowscream and switch to EVBs. Just my 2cp

EVBs only go to 222. Shadowscream will take you to 267. If you don't have tons of cash to spend on sickles, this really is the way to go past 222. Especially if you have a friend who can help you PBAE Nuke the Bears and Wolves.

Not to mention, mistletoe sickle subcombines are a pain in the rear. We recently switched to magnetic/culteral/sickles for my husband since he's max on the shadowscream now, and my arm was dead from doing a billion subcombines for him.
