  • Do You Need Skill 300 to be a Master Now

    Before if you were skill 250 you were called a Master on your skill screen....must you now be skill 300 to be a Master?
    Also.....can you have the Title of Master Brewer worn over your head if your skill is 250, or must you be 300 now?

    You receive the title 'Expert' at 250 and the title 'Master' at 300

      At one time, you would get "master" as your skill level for every skill over 100. The first change to that was languages, which are now "master" AT 100, since they can't go over. The second change was to show both the "master" AND the actual numeric skill.

      So you would be at 101 skill and "master" or 250 skill and "master". That changed shortly after the over-head titles were introduced. Now the skill window shows your tradeskill title instead of "master". So all those 101-masters are now 101 and "apprentice brewer".

      A lot of folks were a bit disappointed when the titles came out because the title for 250 skill is actually "Expert Brewer". You could never get the "Master Brewer" title overhead at 250. In fact, that was the first hint we got that the cap was going to increase.

      The levels of tradeskills:
      100 = apprentice
      200 = journeyman
      250 = expert
      300 = master

      As an example of how this works, my wife is slightly ahead of me in most trade skills. This shows roughly how my her skill window looks:
      Code:
      Make Poison 276 Expert Poison Maker
      Baking          200   Journeyman Chef
      Blacksmithing   124   Apprentice Artisan
      Brewing         200   Journeyman Brewer
      Fletching       228   Journeyman Fletcher
      Jewellery       201   Journeyman Jeweler
      Pottery         200   Journeyman Potter
      Tailoring	162   Apprentice Artisan
      You may have to stretch the skill window to see some of those titles. Also, it doesn't say "Apprentice Tailor" since "Apprentice Artisan" is a higher title. The "Artisan" line of titles is follows exactly the same progression as the reqular tradeskill titles, but all seven basic tradeskills have to reach the cutoff. She wears the "Apprentice Artisan" title over her head now and then, unless she wants to look dangerous, then she's "Expert Poison Maker", or lately "Dirge"

      For another example, when she gets her smithing and tailoring up to 200, she'll be a Journeyman Artisan. All the journeyman titles she already has would be replaced with Journeyman Artisan.
      Code:
      Make Poison 276 Expert Poison Maker
      Baking          200   Journeyman Artisan
      Blacksmithing   200   Journeyman Artisan
      Brewing         200   Journeyman Artisan
      Fletching       228   Journeyman Artisan
      Jewellery       201   Journeyman Artisan
      Pottery         200   Journeyman Artisan
      Tailoring	200   Journeyman Artisan
      I assume my Journeyman Tinker title would never be replaced with an artisan title, since Tinkering is not part of the artisan progression. I should check that.

      I tried combining Celestial Solvent, a Raw Rough Hide, Rough Hide Solution and a Skinning Knife. But the result was such an oxymoron, it opened a rift into another universe. I fell through into one of Nodyin's spreadsheets and was slain by a misplaced decimal.

        So if we are to believe the fact there was no "master" title prior to skills going to 300 and the title instead was expert THEN the assumption would be there is another skill level increase coming so we can be a "grandmaster".

          Grandmaster never existed in any form in the game itself... that was a player invented title for 250 because at the time everyone over 100 was called a master and people wanted to be able to distinguish themselves.

          As such, I would make no assumptions about its future inclusion as an in game title.

            Fishing

            I am skill 187 at Fishing and my overhead title worn says Apprentice Fisherman. Since Fishing cannot go over skill 200.....does that mean we can never wear a Master Title over our heads? If you hit skill 200, will it only say Journeyman Fisherman?
            Or have they made Fishing able to reach 300 skill now?

              I think you're stuck as a journeyman fisherman forever. You don't even get to put an Artisan title on it.

                This is strictly intended as humor...

                1. They'll raise the cap on fishing to 300.
                2. People will rush out and skill up to 300.
                3. Then the devs will make all existing water trivial at 202.
                4. A path to 300 fishing was part of our original plan, but got delayed.
                4. Stand by for harder water...
                5. Harder water will be coming soon.
                6. We're sorry the hard water won't be in this patch, look for it in the next.
                7. We're busy with the fishing stuff for the next expansion, so you should see hard water then.

                They really should apply the same princible to fishing that they did for languages. Since 200 is the max, it should imply you've mastered baiting.

                Oh, and I think there won't ever be a Grandmaster title. Consider the plight of Grandmaster Poison Maker Skitzofrenic Bakstabingest of Mithanel Marr <Delightful Legions of Flying Acrophobia> AFK LFG:
                1. The amount of text over her head would mean being permanently encumbered.
                2. We'd have a pixel shortage.
                3. Her title would need a table of contents.
                4. We'd have to raise the trivial on all the Grandmaster Trophies to 425 and revoke them from anyone who wasn't at least a Master.
