  • Light Blue tradeskills

I've read on the skillup formula thread that the closer to the trivial level of a particular combine, the more successes you have and that successes give you a better chance to skill up. Do the recipes that show up as light blue in the tradeskill UI give any different chances of skilling up because they are light blue. A light blue mob gives less experience, so I was just curious as to whether or not a light blue combine would give you less of a chance at a skill up.

I am working on shadowscream bracers and they just recently went light blue. I was getting about a skill up per 20 combines but since the bracers went light blue I have only received one skill up for the last 48 combines. Of course this could just be bad luck but I ran out of materials to test it further. Anyone have any experience with this?

Most definatley. I've never bothered to mention it before and I've read post after post about how the closer to the trivial the better skill-up chance you have. Personally, when I'm farther away from a trivial I usually skill up like mad and then the closer I get it most definately slows down and takes more combines. I can claim it's just bad luck with the RNG, but this has happened for me in every tradeskill I've ever done on every character.

      Light Blue Combines

I remember reading that you should try to skill up with items that are trivial about 10 points above your skill level, apparently this is why. However, I thought that with all the recent changes the "as close to your level" rule killed the "10 above." After another 47 combines with the bracers being dark blue (stopped using geerlock) I received 4 skill ups. Only 7 more for Gimel to stop taunting me.

There was a formula for calculating your chance to skill up on a given combine. It was posted on the main site under the Calculators option. If you followed that formula, it was clear that you got more skillups on successful combines than on failed combines. Since you are more likely to have a successful combine on an item that is nearly trivial for you, it would follow that you have a better chance to skillup on items close to trivial.

The myths and rumors that it made sense to skill on things a bit further above your trivial were just that.

There has been a change to the skillup formulas, and the new ones have not been shared with us. It is no longer certain if it still makes sense to focus on things close to trivial. My hunch says that it still is though. Perhaps we will be able to bear that out as we get more experience with the new formulas.

I don't know if it was just bad luck on the RNG, but I had an odd experience when I was doing a batch of tailoring skilling recently, going from 220 to 224.

I was using a recipe that had a trivial of 231, which meant that when my geerlok was equiped the recipe was green. I did a whole bunch of combines and didn't get a single skill up. Then on a hunch I unequiped the geerlok and then got 4 skill ups in the last 8 or 9 combines I had left in the batch.

I didn't get any "You can no longer advance your skill" messages (at least I don't think I did) but I suspect that the new skill-up formulae may penalise you if you are skilling up on recipes that are trivial at your current(modified) skill.
