I ask because I did 200 sickle combines last night without one skillup. And thats super unusual even before any change. So how much exactly did this get changed because if its going to be that bad the whole way up itll be time for me to finally abandon this crap.

Ok so 200 combines (think it was only 198 but whatever) with no skillups at skill 255 was just extremely bad luck is what youre saying. Maybe Ill try it again. God whoever designed celesitel essence needs to {think again}, it should just be on a vendor for 3pp each.Last edited by Ngreth Thergn; 04-17-2005, 10:56 AM. Lofwyr, just set up a buyer for a couple of hours, buying CE at your preferred price. I'm pretty sure you'll get a seller really quick. Not quite as good as vendor sold, but pretty darn close.Sir KyrosKrane Sylvanblade

300 combines post-patch
Shortly before the patch, I had maxed out Planar Fruit Pies (282 trivial). Although I didn't keep precise track, I usually got about 5 skill ups per 160 combines (I was hoping for 1 per 20 combines, but did slightly better than that.) I also was lucky and when I maxed that, the lady I offered my remainder fruit too was about to ding 300 on Misty Thicket Picnics. So she turned down my left overs and gave me hers instead. I did 34 combines on that and got 1 skill up. (283 pre-patch.)
Now after the patch... I decided to keep track. I am a lvl 69 necromancer with 393 INT. I have salvage 2, no baking AA's, and of course, I was using a geerlok. I did 300 Misty Thicket Picnic combines and had a total of 13 failures. No skill ups on the failures.
36 combines - (284)
36 combines - (285)
46 combines - (286)
23 combines - (287)
71 combines - (288)
12 combines - (289)
54 combines - (290)
22 combines - no skill up.
Total: 300 combines, 7 skill ups, ~43 combines per skill up attempt. At least double what I was doing before the patch.
I was hoping that 360-400 combines would get me to 300... but at the very least, I will have to do another 600 probably.
My fletching is 283 and holding (skill up after doing 10 elemental bows for my guild), I'm hoping when the "bonus skill up chance" comes out, that elemental bows will be on that list. Because there is no way I will ever be able to do 600 elemental bows to get to 300.

Sorry Ngreth, just really irritated. Its not like skilling up was easy before, why make it harder. I really think they should have just not messed with this; if it aint broke dont fix it. Perhaps if there was some great recipes at 300 or something, where you wouldnt want everyone making things, but tbh Im rather unimpressed with all of them. Not really any better or worse than other things around and theyre arguably easier to attain than the ts made stuff. I just raise them cause its something I (used to) enjoy, but with all the posts of people being in the same situation I am not sure Im going to bother. Sigh.Lofwyr

I had gotten to 282 in pottery pre-change with an average of just about 23 attempts per skill-up from 250-282. Since the change, I made a set of attempts of 200 ruby steins with only 2 skill ups; versus the typical 4-8 for a batch of 200. Granted, I had some bad runs before the change, but this seemed excessive.
While it might have been a good idea to smooth out the skill increases, the cost of failures at the higher levels is painful. I'm not sure how many people can actually afford the pp to fail that much more. Much less the time investment to farm items as in the case of smithing and tailoring.
All I can say is that I am thankful I got baking, brewing, fletching, and jewelcraft all to 300 before the change. Not sure I could afford the added pp or time.

I started working on pottery after the patch, so I wasn't sure what skillup rate to expect. However, I did 2 batches of 200 Star Ruby Stein combines (at 335 Wis), and I got 7 skillups on the first batch (250-257) and 6 skillups on the second batch (257-263). If 4-8 skillups per 200 attempts is what to expect, I can't be unhappy with that result. Still, I'm wishing I had more time before the patch to work these skills.Redeemer Clamford Andson

It has taken me over 500 Star Ruby Encrusted Stein combines to climb from 232 to 239 Pottery with 380 INT. Also, 100 Kaladim Constitutional combines got me from 277 to 278 Brewing. Since the last patch, I've had about 1 skillup per 75 attempts.

Very tiny sampling but on my Pally with a Wis of 365; it took me 50 combines each (approx) to get 284 and 285 in Baking. If this is going to be the norm, I'm looking at about 700+ worth of combines instead of the 200 to 300 combines (pre-nerf) needed to max. That's more than doubled. However, I may of ran into a slump, so do not take this at face value.

Am I understanding this correctly?
1. The plan is to smooth the progression difficulty, so that it will be easier to advance from 190 - 200, but harder to advance from 250 - 300. This upper level difficulty will be mitigated, however, because combines with rare ingredients will have a correspondingly higher chance to yield a skill-up.
2. The "smoother skillup path" coding has been added, so now it is easier to advance from 190 - 200, but harder to advance from 250 - 300.
3. The "rare ingredients bonus" coding has not been added.

I did 297-300 in poison making last night in about 100 combines. with dex 255 and wis 190. Was expecting 10x worse, If anyone post 275 needs any combine ingredients on Povar, send me a tell and will sell them to a fellow rogue at vendor sale price, I have leftovers for around 500 combine attempts.
