  • First impressions of the smoothing of skill progression.

I've been hoarding tailoring/smithing supplies in anticipation for the April 12th patch. I thought I'd share some results from my time doing skill up combines.

I want to make note that my WIS was 255 for all combines. The first thing on tap was blacksmithing. Started at 185 and worked to 188 doing Fine Plate Breastplates. It took me 65 attempts to go from 185 to 188. After that, I did LDoN Bracers (190), LDoN Visors (191), LDoN Collars (194) and then LDoN Pauldrons (196). 96 combines got me 8 skill ups.

So in total, I did 171 skill up attempts and got 11 skill up points which is about a 6.4% success rate.

Then I worked on tailoring. Went from 187 to 188 with 9 acrylia studded mask attempts and 188 to 200 working on Wood Elf DoN Cultural. I did 190 combines working on Expert's Brambleborn Gloves to 192 and then EB Sleeves to 200. 199 attempts yielded 13 skill ups which gave a success rate of about 6.5%

NOTE: Keep in mind that this is just one persons experience doing skill ups. We all know that the RNG at times can be fickle and can be a blessing.

I don't notice a huge change. I've been working on pottery lately, before the patch I did 2 sets of 200 combines of opal encrusted steins, beginning at 199 skill. The first 200 got me 8 skillups, the second 200 got me 6 skillups. Last night (after the patch) I did another 200, and got 6 more skillups. All of this is with 285 int. Not a huge sample size, but I thought I'd throw in my 2 copper.

Think they made all the tradeskills on the same path? (Instead of certain ones being Easy, Medium, Hard like they used to)

I have a small sample size, but I'm with you. Last night, my tailoring started at 167 (plus a geerlok) and I attempted 38 acrylia studded masks with a wisdom around 237. I got about 30 masks back (I forget exactly), but only got 2 skillups! Those two skillups should have taken around ~18 combines, on average, under the old formula. Perhaps the RNG was just toying with me.

          Thanks SoE..

          Relivant stuff..
          Skill : Jewel Crafting
          Stat : Int = 325
          Starting skill = 0
          Skill so far = 17

          # of Combines to get to 17 skill = 200 combines.

          # of combines to get from 16 to 17 skill = 122 combines.

Fail Rate = Failed on 163 combines.

I vote for the system to be changed back to the way it was.

SOE confirmed that low-level skilling up is BUGGED at the moment. They are aware of it and will fix it, no ETA yet.

Going to do 200 more combines though I am sure this will repeat the same thing.

Yes I know the Devs know about it, I want them to see just how bad it is.

Mesaa, thanx, really. We know it's bad at the low levels. It's even worse at 5 or 10 than at 17. The code is fixed, and it's going through testing, etc. now.

While this technically affects everyone, only players trying for their initial skillups will be adversely affected by the bug = new toons and players starting a new skill. When the fix goes Live, those early skillups will happen quickly again, and you'll catch up. Until then, please don't waste components/time anymore.

17 Jord Meat Pies, 72 Cheesy Vegetible Casseroles the next day... no skill-ups.

It is possible to bo alot of combines ( sometimes 200 - 300) before a skill up without the system being bugged. Remember its only 3 to 5% chance ( if not less) of gaining another skill up per combine attempt. It is possible , though highly improbable that the RNG has not come up with 5% for 100 - 300 times of being "rolled".

I so hope it doesn't actually turn out to be this bad. I took a couple months off from eq to deal with my business being flooded, and came back to find out tailoring went to 300, and i basically have to farm othmir to skill up on. Enough fur to do 50 combines is several hours of work. Multiply that times 50 pts., and its more hours sitting and farming in CS than i care to ever do. A couple hundred hours killing greens just isn't worth it. I'm holding out a lot of hope that the success rate gets much better for rarer dropped parts, like they hinted. I'd much rather do exp groups in the elementals, and get a point now and then off a rare drop, than spend most of my time ingame, killing giant rats in Fezzes.
