  • Problems Skilling Up

I've read quite a number of posts on the EQLive forums, about people having problems skilling up (not just tradeskills, but other skills as well.) Has anyone noticed any issues?

The new tradeskill forumla went live yesterday. Has anyone noticed any change (easier, harder, include hard data if you have it.) Any issues that I need to take back to SOE?

PLEASE NOTE: I am only interested in information pertaining to the skill up rate and issues with the new formula. If you have other issues, please start a new thread, post them in the EQ Live Artisan's Way or PM me. I want to keep this just on the skill ups and the forumla. Thanks.

I'm probably going to be doing some alchemy skill ups this weekend, and maybe tinkering. If we've gotten the production patch by then on Test, I'll track the data and submit it to you.

Edit: If the problem is with all skills, I'll do some language learning this weekend too, and track the data.

It took 95 tries on Kaladim Constitutionals to go from 298 to 299. So far 48 into the last skill up for brewing and nothing so far. Not an empirically large sample, but it is certainly tougher than 250-298 was.

Very small sample size so far, but I did 20 combines of gold bar and black pearl last night. (Jewel Craft) I did get 1 skillup.

          Nolrog,

Not knowing the new skillup formula, it is kind of hard to gauge whether a number of combines is far out of league with expected. We know that 250-300 should have about 20% more combines, but how many more should we expect at, say, 296?

How about pre-250? How many should we expect at 112? I know you are looking for extreme oddities, but those happen, anyway. If, however, we know that at 112, we should expect to make 15 combines per attempt, and we are experiencing 45 per for several skillups...then we might think there is a problem.

Edit: also wanted to add this, though not specifically tradeskill-related...I dinged 39 and 40 last night with an alt. I got plenty of skillups on weapons and defensive skills. Went swimming in Gunthak while awaiting a rez. Swam after finished fighting, also. After a total of about 30 minutes swimming (at skill 26), I got no skillups...a little unusual, but not amazing. 3 of the others in my group DID get swimming skillups, though...so I figured just bad luck.

Some reports (see eggszecutor's post in this forum) are good. But check 'the newbie zone' for low end reports. Someone with 20ish pottery skill did 170 combines with no skillups. I've heard of bad runs... but that should've been 40ish skillups, not 0. Or 4 hours of combining to get to 25 baking. Someone reported medding for an hour and only gaining 2 points in meditation, or swimming for an hour with just 1 skillup; not sure if those apply.

As for the high end... I made every effort to finish everything before this patch, I won't be testing the new system for quite awhile.

I was having raising alcohal tolerence on my barbarian trader mule last night...not a hugely large sample but drank a stack with no skill ups with only a skill of 20 max at the time.

I've already posted a link to these various threads on the Correspondent Forum. I'm just trying to get some further info.

It's true that without knowing what the skill uprate should be, it's hard to tell if it's working right. However, we do know certain things that should help. 190ish thru 220ish should no longer be a hell level, 250+ should be harder than before. Skill ups should come very quickly at low levels (0 skill ups ni 170 combines, at 20 skill is definitely a problem, and not a RNG issue.) Using these general principals, we should be able to get a sense if things are working right.

                  Somthings wrong

I was skilling up brewing this morning (Fetid essence,INT 127), 16 to 17 took 178 combines. 17 to 18 took 47. I've done brewing on a few other characters and never seen a low level run this bad.
Mabey the RNG just hates me, but this just seemed weird.

From my guild board, it seems that folks 50+ are surprised with more skill ups than expected in various skills (tradeskill and non-tradeskill). I suspect that something got switched so that low level skill ups are very much less evident and high level skill ups are very much more evident.

I would be interested to hear if others have experienced this, also.

                      From Tanker-Dev at EQLive:
                      --------------------------
Thanx for the input, guys. You were right.

There is currently a bug on Live that is making skilling up in all skills at low levels much more difficult than it was. This resulted from the re-organization of the code when inserting the new Tradeskill skillup formula. We're fixing it now in code, then we'll have to decide when to get this out to the Live servers.

Thanks again for the help finding this.

I did about 200 sickle combines after the patch last night - got 9 skillups from 240 to 249, and then a 10th from some 30ish Tae Ew combines. Doesn't seem too bad. 50 to go, though...

Wis maxed at 365, mastery 3, salvage 3.

Fletching from 272-282 making shadewood bows. I have to admit the skill-up distribution is alot smoother..... alot smoother at 60-70 attempts per skill.

I'd been working on getting my jewelcraft up before the patch, and made it to 291 by then averaging one point in about 20 to 40 combines. However, just prior to patch I had already done 48 combines with no point. Post patch I've added a further 60 combines without further skillup, for a total of 108 since the last point. I must say that with the difficulty entailed in finding large numbers of blue diamonds (68 combines), or the horrendously low buy-back rate for gem studded chains (40 combines), this is seeming very much a grind.

Presumably it's all relative. Following my string of bad luck in JC, I made one smithed symbol and got a skill up from 251 to 252.

On an added note, a level 28 rogue in my guild used up 8 stacks of bandages in Echo Caverns without a single bind wound skillup yesterday. (I stand corrected... he finally went from 69 to 70 skill at the end. But during the two and a half to 3 hours he and a paladin were in there fighting, this was the only skill up either of them experienced in any skill combat or otherwise.)

I was working on JC before and after the patch as well. Wis was 335 for all combines.

Before patch: 175 combines (black sapphire/diamond with platinum/velium) got me 8 skillups (282 up to 290). One skillup per 22 combines. (4.6% skillup chance)

After patch: 245 combines (gem studded chains) got me 7 skillups (290 to 297). One skillup per 35 combines. (2.9% skillup chance)

Pretty noticable difference, which I guess was the intent. All but one skillup was at least 25 combines after the previous skillup.
