I was working on tinkering with my gnome SK and I figured I'd do the freebie ones to get the skill up, but in the time I spent turning in the stupid things I got impatient. Plus skill ups were slow. So I grabbed a couple k plat and started doing stalking probes. Skill ups went up a lot faster and now I have a ton of toys to play with.
Well since the tinkering quests follow exactly the same pattern as the others, ending only in 54 skill, and all gnomes start with a 'free' 50 point skill, it is not surprising that you found skill ups slow!
It is really too bad that GoD tinkering is so limited.....
I'm happy with the freebie quests. I'm impressed that they're even marginally useful. GoD was a high-level expansion, it's generous that there is anything for low levels at all. They could have just put in a generic boring timesink quest for the flag instead of making it a way to gain some skills.
83/1000 High Elven Enchanter on cazic (8x300 tradeskills)
At the risk of slightly derailing this thread, I have a question that I was wondering if anyone could answer.
When you refine your own items, are the lower level refinement combines treated the same as the rare combines? I was assuming they are separate for purposes of gaining in refining skill, but would like to know if anyone has annecdotal evidence to the contrary.
I routinely get 2 dark matter when I refine raw dark matter now, but I haven't had the courage to do a click on the infused dark matter items. (I have no access to the locked zone where this stuff drops so my only source of the infused raw dark matter is when I'm lucky enough to find it for sale in the bazaar at a good price.) I've been turning in the infused items to guarantee I'll get 2. It would be very cool if I could just refine the rare stuff myself if I felt I had a reasonable chance of still getting 2 per combine.

Yes, when you start getting 2 returned on the regular raw dark matter, you will at the same time start getting 2 returned for the raw infused dark matter. My gnome is now getting 3 returned all the time for both. I too saved up my infused matter practicing on the regular until I got at least 2 all the time.
Haven't nailed down the "always get 3" number yet, but several toons doing several different conversions tells me that you need to do 80 of a given skill's conversion to hit the "always get 2" results. At a rough guess, you need to do a total of 160-200 conversions to max this skill and always get 3 from any given conversion.
And yes, the rare and common conversions (Taelosian Tea Leaves and Taelosian Mountain Tea Leaves, for example) share the same conversion rate, so save up the rare versions (raw infused dark matter, taelosian mountain tea leaves, shimmering nihilite and shimmer ore, etc.) until you've maxed efficiency on the common varieties.
is there anywhere a 57bst can solo getting the common drops for this stuff? i don't raid and typically can't find groups. main reason i ahven't done GoD combines

If I remember correctly from another thread on this board, it was experimentally found you need a total of ~80 combines to reach the "2 stacked" (ie, always 2) phase, and ~380 combines to reach the "3 stacked" (ie, always 3) phase. There were a few minor discrepencies (like 80, 81, and 82 combines for the 2stacked point) and hence the ~, but they were all very close so it seems rather reliable to me.

1. Created Wood Elf Warrior (all starting points in STA)
2. used /testbuff command and wore all gear (except -CA mask)
3. Important stats: WIS(80) CHA (75)
Just a question: For a warrior, wouldn't the important stat be STR instead of WIS?
I remembered seeing something about STR being a determining factor if it was higher than INT/WIS. I checked and this only applies to blacksmithing apparently.
Tradeskills: If your strength is higher than your intelligence or wisdom, it determines how quickly you gain skill in Blacksmithing.
