First off a gem cutter is needed to apply your JC skill to the augments. In bazaar, only one was being sold for 10k (item is trivial 30 something, so 10k is way overpriced). To make the gem cutter, though, you need diamond dust that drops off giants in Permafrost. I killed about a dozen of them and no diamond dust dropped. I opted to buy the 10k gem cutter instead. I also had 2 flowstones that I was told dropped off named in OOW. With JC2, GM with GM bag, 280 INT 280 DEX and 280 CHA, I tried to apply the fine hydroabrasive + gem cutter to the augs. I failed on both attempts.

You're from Tunare, aren't you? You're going to hate me for this, but ...
I'm the shaman you ran into while hunting the dust, and then you'd sent me the tell about the cutter and the fails (/comfort). I got a dust drop off a Magus in Vox's room, made a baby gnome and made the cutter, and tried the combine on the one augment drop I'd found in the bazaar, and ... got a Radiant Cut Voidflow (found trivial 351, I was super lucky, yes). It is possible! Don't give up!

So let's say I have Mudflow Stone. Can I "polish" it and then "radiant cut" it later? Or do I only get one shot?

Yeah, thats a different item.
The one weird thing about Everquest is that item names have to be EXACT.
'griffon egg' is not the same as 'griffon eggs'.

Not just names.. ID numbers too.
THere's a couple caster runes (either attraction, nagafen, or expulsion - don't recall which) to where there's two different runes with the exact same name that make different items. They don't stack with each other either.
Probably was immensely frustrating back in the days when the UI ate DNCs
