Given how much a complete pain in the butt it is to get porous mineral blocks in sufficient quantity (remember, they don't stack, and they're an uncommon drop to begin with off something that's in one zone and only about a third of that zone), most tinkers will indeed have invested thousands to get to that level, simply because just sticking with brewing Geerloks the entire way will take them years to get to 170 skill.

Sorry, but I find the tradeskill community to be woefully misinformed about tinkering. It is, without question, far more expensive than the non-restricted tradeskills to skill up on, with only perhaps Alchemy being more of a complete pain in the butt.

There's a good reason even the oldest servers have only a handful of GM tinkers, who are all vastly outnumbered by even GM tailors, which should give you an idea of what the skill is like to work on.

As for my read on why these corking devices aren't cheap: Gnomes can't forage. If people are selling branches of sylvan oak by the bucketful on Vazaelle, I sure haven't seen it. The only people I make these for have to provide their own branches.

Now, give us a tinkered foraging device, and I think you'll see the price fall in a hurry.

Currently on brell, 2 people, total of 3 branches for 1pp. One guy has 11 branches at 2pp. There are 2 more at 3pp.

So for 31pp right now in brell bazaar, you can have enough foraged branches for 16 corking devices.

I will grant that there are 9 at 10pp, 1 at 25pp, and 2 at 50pp, but I don't think anyone would pay over 10.

They are stackable now, when was the last time you checked in bazaar?

Brell is not one of the oldest, or most populated servers, and GM gnomes are scarce. A gnome with 170 skill are everywhere though. Simply because every gnome in the game past level 16 tinkers a bit, it is in their nature.

I just had 2 of these made last night.

Under 300 pp each in components (found my BD's on a Kaladim merchant. 112 CHA Ally faction 262.5 pp)

I have a 250 Erudite brewer now, and a 201 dwarven smith. All she has to do is ask, and I'll make whatever I can for her.

She was pleased. Said it was the first truely useful thing she'd made tinkering (she was 195 last I knew, maybe over 200 now though)

So, one is for a GM trophy (when I can afford it) and the other is for stat drinks.

Average price on Xegony for a BD seems to run between 400 - 450 There are quite a few people still trying to sell for 500+ though.

Tinkering is not the cheapest skill to raise. My gnome necromancer spent 1k getting to 102 and since then I’ve gone through 5 backpacks full of mineral blocks and have a skill of 105. The mob the blocks drop off of is a popular mob for characters to gain xp from. And since they only spawn in one small area and are located right off of the Nexus, they are usually camped. And I for one don’t approve of characters who can’t get xp from a mob taking mobs away from players who can. So finding a time when I can collect the mineral blocks is not easy. That’s the main reason I’ve not practiced tinkering is some time. There are other skill paths to take, but they are too cost prohibitive for me at the moment.

So anyone who just looks at the cost of materials that goes into a corking device and decides that the device is overpriced is being extremely short sighted. It takes either a LOT of time or a lot of money to reach 170 tinkering. And though I may search for the best price I can get, I can’t blame tinkers for trying to make back some of the time and money they have invested in the skill.

*gasp* Get yourself a CHA buff and/or improve faction with those vendors hon! Best price for Diamonds and Blue Diamonds = 210p. I buy em off the FV-server vendors so often they are runnin' outta my little gah-nomie ears. Did get hubbies enchanter-gnome to 250 and myself to 200 in JC so some day I can make a ton of Artisan's Seals for friends and family.

EDIT: do'h! I forgot about the traffic n' greed merchants... guess there is nothing that can be done to lower their prices.

As for the Corking Device... I borrowed one to max Brewing at 250. Later I did see one for sell in the bazaar for $6kp and said "No way!" to muhself. Finally found them on'a most honorable tinkerin' gnome for $1.5kp and I figured it worth that price if only to help her recoup some of the cost in skilling up Tinkerin' (something I've yet to begin workin' on). So I bought 2 as to have one for a trophy-attempt and one left still for brewing Kaladim Constitutionals (which I dont brew unless I absolutely gotta because they are crazy-making and fail too often and THEN cost too much to re-sell to boot) but have the Corking Device in case a friend needs some K-Const's. One of these days I might actually sit down to begin muh tinkerin' trade but have been rather burned out on some database work I'm doing (for myself and a handful of friends aimin' for the 1750+++ Club) that I'd just soon shoot myself in the foot than to log-in and work on the tradeskills right now -- so no, I've still not attempted making my Grandmaster Brewer's Corker. :?

An update, though none of you will care, I found a tinkerer on SZ! His name is Ozmodian, and his prices are most agreeable. In my case I supplied him with enough components to make 2 corking devices. I got one, he kept the other. So in effect I bought the device for ~550 pp.

I've never seen blue diamonds on vendors for less than that price, from 110-135 charisma and all factions up through ally.

                      Hiya Balkin :P

Yeah, getting a corking device shouldn't be that hard. 170 seems to be about the "give up" point for tinkers right now, and you can find a lot of 170 tinkers out there.

For the "make a tinker alt" posts though... Just remembering the costs of getting to around 170, you might be better off trying 10 corker combines at skill level 50 and praying you get one or two made, than paying and farming to get to 170ish.

And yeah, the next person who tells me tinkering is cheap since luclin might make me cry. I've spent approx 25k going from 180 to 200 (7k of that going from 195 to 196). No, I wasn't doing brewing geerlocks (the fabled 3pp combine). I get approximately 2-3 porous mineral blocks in a full clearing of the netherbians, with a respawn of maybe 10 or 20 minutes. So maybe 8 an hour if I have them all to myself. I have only had them all to myself at around 3 to 7am on weekdays - the rest of the time it's a popular mid 20s experience camp. Cheaper.. yeah. Cheap.. /cry.

I think we should petition to have the porous mineral blocks drop off of Stonegrabbers in Marus Seru. Then we’d have an entire zone to hunt for them.
