Hey, y'all. I assume that at least a few of you are interested in EQ2. It seems that SOE had a shindig for the fan site operators this past weekend and some writeups are starting to apppear.
The most interesting from this board's standpoint is the EQ2 Vault report, specifically the second-to-last paragraph or so about the artisan tree.
It sounds like tradeskilling in EQ2 is being supported much more like a second "class" than as a hobby the way that EQ currently supports things. The infrerence I make from the limited information at the official EQ2 website and Deathstryker's report referenced above is that crafting will require you to choose a general class, then become increasingly specialized as you level up. This is analgous to the way your character levels up in her adventuring class.
Presumably that means that we won't see a single character grandmastering several different skills. Instead, we'll see crafters working to become the best at one primary skill. (Please note that this is speculation at this point.)
The goal would seem to be the inclusion of crafters as a vital part of the economy, as well as a vital part of each other's supply chains. I'll admit to a certain amount of trepidation on this point. I'm one of those players who likes to be self-reliant for the most part. I'm not completely comfortable with the idea of being dependent on other players but that's part of what makes an economy viable so I'm keeping an open mind. Whether it works or not will depend to a great extent on SOE's success at making all parts of the crafting supply trade profitable and desirable for everyone.
Speaking of supplies, the one thing that does strike fear into my heart is the notation by Deathstryker that "Crafting success is based on the quality of the harvested items used in crafting..." It sounds perfectly reasonable, but it makes me pray to Bristlebane that we're not getting some variation on the Star Wars Galaxies crafting system.
Anyway, there's the info if anyone's interested. The game's barely in closed beta so nothing's written in stone at this point. Deathstryker is apparently posting some audio recordings of the developer sessions soon so I'd check back on EQ2 Vault next week if you're interested in this stuff.
