I had one Essence of Shadow I'd found somewhere, and I put it up for sale each time I logged in as a trader. It was rare to find anyone else selling one, so I started high and kept bringing it down. Eventually, I got tired of having it take up bank space and sold it to a vendor. That's pretty much what I do with all the rare items I find that I don't plan to use myself.

      ...

All of us have experienced the situation where individual components cost more than the final product is worth (taking into account failure rate).

One of the major reasons for this is a niche market -- because of the limited supply, many tradeskillers need just ONE COMPONENT to finish up the thing they're working on. Imagine the situation where you want to make a 200,000pp breastplate and you just need a single component to finish it. If you had to buy all of the items at an exhorbitant price, it wouldn't be worth it, but if you buy only one item at 50,000pp, you can finish up the breastplate and ship it off to market.

I think this makes sense in the same way that a salvaged car is worth more when broken down into components than the whole car is. If you're buying car parts from a salvage lot and assembling your own homemade 1999 Honda Civic, you'll pay a whole lot more than just buying it used.
