  • Fletching or Smithing for Throwing Weapons?

I have a Half Elf Rogue and I'd like to take up either fletching or smithing in order to make her some good thrown weapons. I don't XP very fast and I'll be using any AA's for things other than Tannan Crafting Mastery so only one would go over 200 (if at all).

Having searched through the recipes its hard to decide which to go for (pity we cant filter down to just thrown weapons - they get bundled in with other stuff) as both skills seem to have several good items. I'm looking for something I can produce in fairly large quantities - it's no good having to hunt rare drops in some level 60 uber zone (she's 54) to get ingredients.

Currently I'm leaning towards Fletching because

    (1) Its cheaper to get a relatively good skill
    (2) I can get to around 200 at the vendor
    (3) If I really can't make many good throwing weapons I can always work on my archery.

    Any thoughts please? Thanks.

    Fishbone Darts

About as cheap as they come really. They have some pretty high trivials on skills that most people dont bother with. I used those darts for quite a while myself.

Edit: Doh, I forgot about the celedine Herb which runs around 5pp a piece.

Edit#2: Hmm it appears I have misread your question. I thought you were looking for something to actually make with the fletching skill, not how to get the fletching skill up.

I believe you can get to 202 Fletching sitting at a vendor, provided you have the financial wherewithal.

Smithing can be taken up to 115 (trivial for banded mail) or so easily. I believe that most throwing weapons trivial below this, so it should suffice for your purposes. Smithing does require running around to different vendors to get supplies, and then running back to the forge.

This isn't a bad idea... I will bring it up with Ngreth and see if there might be a way to do that.

You can get to 250 fletching sitting at a vendor, but it gets really expensive past 202

There are also some low level quests out of Shar Vahl that give you throwing weapons, but I don't remember atm if they're magic or not.

Whittled Fishbone Darts trivial at 182. I've been using them to skill up in Fletching while resupplying my monk alt with throwing items.
