I never did make a gnome chanter. That's for two reasons. First, I haven't made the 1750 club with my main (darn close now). Second, whatever low end tinkering I need, I just did them with my main, who is a high elf cleric. I am not sure if anyone knows this but everyone, not just gnome can tinker. It's just that you start out at skill of 50 and it will not increase. So if I need a collapsible fishing pole, I just get a bunch of raw material and just tinker until I get one. I may get 1 out of 4 tries but I can make it eventually. If something is cheap to make and uses easily available items then I will make them myself.

Non-gnomes start with a skill of 50 tinkering? That doesn't sound right. Gnomes start with a skill of 50, but cannot increase it till they are 16. No one else can ever increase their tinkering.

But I think everyone else has 0 tinkering skill. Though yes, they can still do combines.

Non-gnomes have zero skill but some of the trivials are very low, like 16, and at zero skill, you can make a 16 trivial with decent success.

I wouldn't try an Aqualung or Corking Device though.

Yup, at about 150 skill. My main is an enchanter, so I made my gnome a wizard with thoughts of ports and the like, but I've never levelled him past 16, so that's still in the future...

I started him with grand visions of GMing tinkering, but I've found that since I hit 1750, I have amazingly little patience for tedious piles of combines and subcombines. Used it all up, I guess...

Not a gnome, but I created a halfling so I can tailor.

When you say "Once I hit 1750".......what does that 1750 mean or stand for?

1750 represents reaching 250 in the seven main tradeskills (baking, brewing, fletching, jewelcrafting, pottery, smithing and tailoring). It's the Holy Grail of the tradeskill community. There's even a post listing members of the "1750 club" somewhere on the site.

Made a lvl 29 gnome enchanter to enchant things to get pottery to 250 and to make cams for my fletching.

                          1750

Arrghh now that i found out about the 1750 club, i have to put tinkering on the back burner and get goin with all the tradeskills.
I never considered Fletching since i have no use for the items......i would rather tinker.....but i now have a goal for the 1750 club.
I am resting my fingers now for all the clicking in the upcoming weeks

Same here - a gnome chanter....... but in my case I loved the class and race so much he has ended up as my main supplanting my Froglok Paladin. Now I rarely play any toon other than my gnome chanter.

Made a gnome mage, twinked her to 255 INT, PLed her to 16, and got tinkering from 50 to 167 in two days. Been on the back burner ever since, but I have items for another 200ish combines on various characters and have been saving every steel ball bearing and coiled spring I can loot.
