Because I'm playing this game for fun not profit. If you are only doing things for profit, why are you playing this game?

Obsessive compulsive probably has something to do with it too, its always fun to see the skill up messages.

I started because I figured a Halfling ought to be able to make a picnic; that the picnics are useful is a bonus

In the making of picnics a lot of skills get used, and if I have the skill I might as well take it as far as my limited time and money will let me.

Back when I was a wee Bard I heard about this "Coldain Prayer Shawl" Quest. I tried to start it at lvl 30 but I was told "it's a waste to do this quest because of all the tradeskills." So I listened and I continued to XP. About this time I got tired of buying Iron Rations all the time and I wanted to make my own so I started baking....to FISH ROLLS. Then I kept Fish Rolls in my backpack at all times and would make them for my friends as well. Then as I progressed in levels I still had this nagging in the back of my head "Complete the Prayer Shawl, Complete the Prayer Shawl...." So i put it off and off until I joined my newest guild...the first raid I ever did w/ them was the 8th Shawl walk and from that point on I knew that the Prayer Shawl would be mine to wear one day. So I started working on my tradeskills...begrudgingly at first and as I moved up in level I grew to love it. Now I'm pumping up my tradeskills for PotC quest (I have my earriong already but I would love to "earn one") and then onto the Phylactory (can Bards use?) and Aid Grimmel as my guild works up towards ele planes. Tradeskills are a great relaxation for me. however it used tobe just as bad on my wrists as twisting is. I'm starting to become the go to guy in my guild for tradeskill related stuff. MOst tradeskill stuff that drops on raids is getting defaulted to me. It's pretty cool to be my guilds "Go to" Tradeskill guy.

I think that Aid Grimel is more like an epic quest for Tradeskillers, as it requires an amount of dedication and outright insanity to complete. Just think about it...220+ in both Tailoring and Smithing. That alone is enough to cause insanity in most, not to mention the insanely rare components (some of which are highly prized in regular combines). Oh well, 4 down, 3 more to go.

I always enjoy those situations where you are in a group and have a few extra supplies on you from your last fletching run and the ranger runs out of arrows, or starts making some that are class 1 wood point arrows and you're making class 2 ceramic hooked....as a druid, just because you can. This has happened to me numerous times in the past where one of my characters can make vastly better arrows than the pullers who use the archery and you can't, you just make 'em because you like to tradeskill, so you can sit down and throw out a few stacks on the spot for them.

Being able to recite/find the recipe for something at a moments notice when someone wants to know about it.

Making some of your lvl 65 guildies drool because you're highest character at lvl 50 is wearing a full suit of Underfoot Plate and they've still got some sort of generic lvl 35 type armor on.

Starting out a twink when LDoN comes out because you want to see what the lower level LDoN runs are like and give the twink a full set of LDoN plate armor from the tempers you've collected for with your main.

Knowing the worthfulness instinctively of some item that drops in a zone you're in with a group. Knowing many times that it's a TS item as opposed to a vendor item just by the name many times.

Being able to torment the friends you regularly play with because you managed to finish up the last trivial on FP(Wu's, Arctic Wyvern, Kaladim Constitutionals etc) before he does.

Being the local guild repository for knowledge when someone sees a drop and wonders either what it's for, or if it's worth keeping. Then of course being the member of choice to bribe/cajole/blackmail into making said item assuming it's not race specific

I do trade skills for fun, but then that's why I play the game. The profit is just a means.

After seeing the worn spot in the wall from beating my head against it for the Coldain quest, I'm probably going to bore a hole through it if I take on Aid Grimel

                      Coz I'm an addict...

                      Or something like that...

I like seeing those skill numbers go up.

And if there is profit to be had, it's a plus.
Gawds only knows how much pp and time I've had to spend MAKING the stuff.

I started baking, because Vah Shir EAT 2x the amount of any character, and it saved money to just MAKE the stuff myself.

Alchemy--it's part of being a shaman, at least IMO.

Brewing--ah heck, why not just get drunk?

The rest--I blame the Coldain prayer shawl for the rest...
