  • Thoughts On Trade Skills

    Hey all,

I just recently started EQ and am wondering if the trade skills are worth getting into?

It seems like all the "good stuff" is dropped off of mobs and done in quests. So where does this leave crafters?

Is there cash to be made? Fun to be had?

    Im looking for your thoughts

      Fun to be had
If you are looking for fast plat on trade skills, sorry
If you are looking for uber items from trade skills, sorry again
(well appart from the shaws, /drool)

The main reason why I do the trade skills is to supply my guild with drink and meals (stat stuff) and to work towards doing the prayer shawl quest and I don't see myself doing the aid grimel (probably spelled that wrong but heh) quest.

Granted, there are some great items that you can make with trade skills, but if you are just looking for uber items or plat, you are better off to grind out the exp and get flagged for high end PoP zones.

PS Sorry if this sounds harsh, but even with the new trade skill UI, the amount of farming and time spent on getting skill ups can be very frustrating. Trade skills are fun to do, and personally rewarding. Took me 4 tries to make my GM Corker for brewing at a skill of 250, but when I got it, I was very happy and proud.

250 in brewing with a trophy! All other trade skills? /sigh don't ask.
      Magelo to see my junk.

I agree. The new UI has taken some of the deadly grind out of tradeskilling. No more 10000 clicks to go from 0 to 100. You can do that in 200 clicks. I'm working on smithing right now. For some reason, I decided to take smithing to 250 first (the reason is that my guild has no 250 smiths available, but has bakers and brewers and even a fletcher, so there wasn't a great need for them.) However, the farming for stuff that trivials over 200 is still very painful. I spend a couple hours in CC farming velium, and I have enough for 20-30 combines. If I'm lucky, I get one skill up with that (at 194, I'm averaging about 25 combines per skill up.)

Things like brewing though, where you can buy everything needed to skill up to 248 or something like that will be a breeze (assuming the UI can learn that recipe.)

          Brewing

The new trade skill UI has made brewing the 'easiest' trade skill to do, you can get to 248 on purchased items, no forrages needed etc. Even then, doing KCs for the last two points involves parking yourself in Kaladim(sp) and picking up some ground spawns... wooptie do...

I GMed Brewing, and am now working on tailoring (gawd... why did i ever combine two spiderling silks? /sob), the 'hard way' without the new UI. But brewing isn't very 'profitable' compared to other trades.

Hence the 'no fast track to plat' mentality for me...
