Non-Foraging Main

My main toon is a high elf wizard, and he's slowly working his way up the ranks in every trade skill. The only problem is he'll never be able to forage.
I know I'm going to have to create a new alt to forage with, but I have some questions.
-Is there a race/class that's best if ALL I care about is their ability to forage, and to forage quickly?
-If I don't level them past, say 15-20, are there zones I'll want to forage in that I won't be able to get to?
-Are there any zones in particular I should be practicing in to start with? e.g. zones that have items I should be saving up, instead of pods of water and vegetables.

I love my wizard, he farms better than any other class I've played, but I'm noticing that a lot of cool tradeskills require foraged items. Any help would be appreciated =)

You want the char at least 39, to max forage, you are looking at a druid or ranger, if you have a 50+ healling type (Druid or shammy) to help PL you, I would go ranger, with fairly decent bazaar gear a ranger can solo most of that range with out braking a sweat, druids become better if you want the char to be 46+, say if you are baking and want bread crumbs or justice fruit in PoJ.

When I made a character to forage I made a druid because he could port to or close to where I needed to forage if I after a item that came from a certain zone.

This was before PoP tho and isn't as big of a issue now but he can still port to some places you can't get to with PoP.

But if you have more than one account and your forager is on a different account than your wizard the ports don't matter.


And sense I made him a halfling I'm now starting to bring his tailoring up to make those 100% weight reducing bags. Sure I could get the plat and buy the travelers bags but what's the fun in that

druid

the book makes most zones quick and easy to get to, but some forages are still found several zones from a book although there is a portal there, like stonebrunt or grimling forest. with a wizard that can port playing an alt that can't could be tedious. druids can also charm powerful pets and mow down other mobs so you can get drops as well as forages, unless you're really going to twink the ranger out.

Foraging Alts

My suggestion is a wood elf druid. The advantage is that he/she will start with 50 foraging, and so you can forage decent stuff while you get your first ten levels. For practicing the skill once you get above level 10, I suggest going to the Lesser Faydark. The only rares are both valuable, there are lots of high level folks around (due to the MM LDoN traffic) so the nasties don't last long near the zone to the Greater Faydark, it's close to Kelethin for selling off stuff and for shorter corpse runs if you get whacked, and if you're careful, there are places in the zone you can hunt in your 20s. Once you're near 30, you can start considering Thurgadin. Again, it's got valuable forages and the bank right in zone, and you can hunt in the back near the mines for experience, nearby lots of guards in case things go sour. Bind yourself in the Thurgadin Exchange, and you can even practice trades while you med.

P.S. Be sure to check out the Katta Castellum quest and get yourself a foraging machette (yes, the name is misspelled in game). It really does make a difference, and you can forage up the parts for the machete quest yourself near zone edges, in relative safety.
