  • Geerlock Skill Ups

I realize this has been addressed in the FAQ as well as mentioned in a couple threads, but im still a bit confused on the subject, so please bear with me. If you are trying to advance a tradeskill, in my case jewelry crafting, and use a geerlock does this prevent you from advancing your skill with items that would not be trivial otherwise? For example, lets say i am at skill 200, and im trying to craft something that is trivial at 205 to gain skill ups. Lets also say that im using a geerlock, which would put my jewelry crafting skill at 210. Would i still be able to advance my skill using the same recipie for the 205 trivial item? or since with the geerlock my skill is 210, will the attempt be recorded as trivial and my skill will not have chance at uping?

Thanks for any info you can offer me

You will make increases (at least occasionally!) as long as you're making items over your true skill level. Having a geerlok will increase your chances of success on the item, but won't change the fact of your trivial levels (you will see this in the message you get - if you're making an item with a trivial of 205 and your real skill is 200, you won't get the trivial message until your real skill is 205, whether you equip a geerlok or not).

Your actual level and the geerlok are independant. I went from 190 - 200 in brewing even though on the UI it showed 200+ from an actual skill level of 192..

So then it would be to someones advantage to always practice their crafting with a geerlock since it will increase the chance of success?

In most cases, yes. There are some rare cases where you'd prefer failures (like if you using Solstice Robes to skill up tailoring, where a success eats up your chain, and the chains cost more than you can sell the robe for).

This all depends on. If you are lower than level 61 and have maxed your stats for the tradeskill, i.e. 255 in wis/int/str/dex, then it make sense to use the geerlok. However, I would never sacrifice the main slot to a geerlok when skilling up and give a big chunk of my wisdom instead of using my epic. You can also make up the wis/int using KEI or similar buffs but if you are not maxed out on your stats without geerlok, I would not use it.

                Geerlock affect skill up rate?

Does the geerlock affect the rate of skill up? Probably not an answerable question unless people keep good statisitcs.

No. The only thing that affects skillups is the higher of int/wis/other (for some tradeskills). Not only is this an answerable question, the answer was given by one of the tradeskill devs. If you want skillups, max your stats. If you want success, use a geerlok.

All this is in the FAQ.

More successes means that you will spend less over all money on the trade, since you will have move items to sell back to the vendor to recoup some of your costs.

A geerlok does not affect the rate of skill up. I am absolutely, positively sure of this. And yes, there are people who kept good records. Search the boards and you will find some. The geerlok increases your skill level when checking for the success, so that you succeed more often. Skill ups, and successes are in no way, shape or form related to one another. Skill ups are determined by the controling statistic (Higher of INT, WIS, STR (smithing) or DEX (fletching))
