    I have an idea (Quick, stamps it out before it spreads!) I hope I don't get into trouble with Ngreth for suggesting something that might mean more work for him

    After reading a certain post in the PSR, it occured to me that perhaps a great deal of angst could be avoided if there was a Forum where newcomers could post all of their questions. The expectation on the part of us oldtimers would be that the same old questions might get asked again and again so we would be expected to either answer the question or ignore the post. Any other type of response could be a banable offense.

    Newbies would not have to be frightened by certain angry halflings (Not you Denmom, the OTHER halfling), hulking Barbarians with bird fixations, rightous paladins, or even sarcastic trolls. We would all understand the purpose of that forum and even redirect questions asked in other forums to the Newcomer one. Or moderators could just move them to the right place.

    So, is this a good idea or have I been thinking too much

    The addition of a new forum won't help.

    It just means one more place that;
    • won't get used or
    • get used for the wrong thing, and
    • require more moderator time.

    I don't want to sound neagtive. In theory it's a good idea. In practice it doesn't work out.

    I speak to this from nearly a decade of online community management.

    The system we have now works. It's a little clunky sometimes. But, just like the mythical horse lead to water, you can lead a newbie to knowledge, but you can't make them read.

        Lilosh should I notify our Vale guard and put a hit on their head?

          Hate to state the obvious but nothing is stopping the "old timers" from ignoring the post now. No one MAKES them respond in chat channels or these boards. Think about it. Who has the problem and the power to solve it? They do.

            many of the newbie questions would be answered if they read the faqs anyway. those are some of the worst posts to me. post instead reading the faq and learning all the other good stuff as well.

                Aye, over 75% of "n00b" questions would be answered if they read the FAQ. Maybe a big huge flashing banner to read the FAQ before posting would help. /shrug

                  Hopefully ya'll noticed the reference to Hulking Barbarians with bird fetishes...I'm not above poking fun at myself.

                  /sigh, Lothay is right, great in theory, lousy in practice.

                          If I remember right, Sumamael (sp?) had that as his sig for a while, when he was heavily moderating the smithing forums after a major change (forget if it was May 8th, expansion launch, or what). It was gigantic, but ya, it was good
