Can't you skip the quests and do the combines yourself anyway, if you learn the recipe from EQTraders?

Is there a reason to do the progressive QoT quests?

The quests are how you learn to convert raw material into the refined material to need to do the tradeskilling. You shouldn't be able to convert it by yourself without doing this quest (something I never tested... bad me).
The recipe for the conversions is simply: 1 unrefined material.
Click combine and you get refined material (and a recipe should be added to your list).Ianthe - 65 Dread Lord
Grizzor Faewalker - 65 Druid
250 Baker, Brewer, Fletcher, Jeweler, Potter, and Tailor
200 Fisher

I did the combines and got the full dialoague of which this is a part. She points to a clearly marked bottle of liquid, a common substance that you might not have thought to use when working with this material
What is the liquid though?

It's just a storyline way of telling you that you can now do the combine on your own.Originally posted by Niellya

You don't actually need the liquid. Just put the raw item in the container by itself, and click combine.

The NPCs will also give 2 of the refined item back sometimes. To refine the raw material you can do one of 2 things. Hand the NPC the raw material and get 1 refined item back (The npc says they keep a smallportion for their time).
If you do the quest and are able to do it yourself, when you do the combine, you have a 50/50 chance (guessing here) that you will get 1 or 2 of the refined item back, instead of just 1.
So my friend and I both had some wheat (true story). She turned in her 2 wheats to the NPC and got 4 refined flours back. I did the 400 combines and refined my 3 wheats myself. I ended up with 3 refined flours...
Not amused.
The quest text implies that if you refine enough yourself that perhaps you'll get better at it and raise the percentage of double returns. Maybe eventually you'll get 2 back every time. Too bad you can't see the progression of this new feature...

I noticed something kind of funny with these quests while doing them on my Enchanter, sometimes you wouldn't need to hand back a full 100 of each individual type - but randomly (it seemed) to accept 97 - 98 or 99 successful combines to be good enough to move to next level of quest.
Anyone else notice the same thing?

I had actually thought these combines were no fail. At 250 in each skill, I did all 7 last night the 400 combines way with none failing.

Yes, if you read my walkthrough, I mention that. I have failed 1 or 2 per 100 combines on skills less than 250 and they still gave me the next level without finishing up the 100.Originally posted by Krrak

Well, you can fail. All my skills at 250, I did not fail on any of them. I didn't even use my trophy, my net skill was at 250. However, tailoring, it was only 224 and with the trophy it was 235, I failed 4 times in 400 combines.Originally posted by Suva

Ours is not to reason why.
These things appear to be somewhat inconsistent. Those with 250 skill in a trade can sometimes whip through it with no failures and only 400 combines. There don't seem to be any guarantees though. Sometimes the NPC's will accept less than 400 returns, other times they appear to want an extra stack for one item or another (or even two).
Really the best way to do them is just keep doing them until he (or she) gives you the next item, or the "secret." For most of us if we try to keep count we go even more nuts than we already are!
