    Ah yes they are.

For a high level recipie that returns a high level item you need components from high level zones / mobs, since skill isn't the only bottleneck in tradeskills.
On the other hand, I'd like to make elemental quality items out of low quality pelts....

And the 'point' of GoD is new content:
Also, there will be new "Raid tools" that can be unlocked, as well as a new "tribute system" which use is still rumored about, but probably a money sink similar to the casino.
Graffe thread about new AAs and the new Raid tools
To many people (me included) Velious is still the best expansion to date since it had such rich content, storyline. Hopefully the success can be repeated with GoD.

      CD vs Download

I'm a bit slow but this is something that every time I think I have figured out I suddenly don't. I thought that the downloaded versions were tied in part to your compy and in part to your toon.
For example, let's say I've down loaded LoY on my computer then I'm peachy and can play it to my hearts content. If I go to a friend's computer and they don't have LoY then I don't get to play it with my charrie. If some one comes to my computer and plays on their account but they don't have LoY then they won't see any of the LoY stuff. At least that's how I thought it went. Now I'm just confuzzled again.

My question is, if for some reason I've got to go and *twitches* reformat my hard drive and re-instal everything does that mean because I downloaded LoY and don't have a CD I'm just out the money I paid for LoY? Will I have to download it again, or is my account flagged (if that's the right term) for LoY and when I go through the patcher thingy I'll have everything back to the way it was?

      ~Edit~
I was just using LoY as an example but I guess it works for all of the downloaded options I guess.

You can download it regardless of having payed for it.
All the Digital download or whatever they call it does is flag your account to be allowed to use the new features / zones, just like you would do manually with a CD key from the boxed version.
Where the files come from doesn't matter and you can always download them through the patch program.

Itek: That was the type of info I was looking for, and had not found before. All I had heard was 'new expansion, new expansion, pay soe more money!' without actually hearing what I would get for this $60/$90 bucks. So, thanks. ^_^

"Lilosh, you missed my point. The 'point' of Luclin was AAs, raising the level cap, and Bazaar. The 'point' of PoP was to give a whole bunch of hard zones for the people with no life, plus books for everyone else. Loy was a handful of new zones, but I always thought the 'point' was all the 'interface' things that came... bank, maps, new race, dyes. LDoN's 'point' is a new way to do what you've always done before. "

The point of luclin was.... its a game. Here is more stuff for you to do and experience have fun playing.

The point of POP was ..... its a game. Here is even more stuff for you to do and experience. Have fun playing.

The point of LOY was.... its game. Here are a few more things for you to do and experience.

Expansions are nothing more than more stuff for me to do. More ways for me to do it, and one more reason for me to continue to plunk down 13 bucks a month to entertain myself in my spare time.

Its fun and cheap entertainment. SOE has yet to put out an expansion that has made it less fun for me to play the game. If I have the money for an expansion I"ll buy if not I wait until I do.

Do you expect great tradeskilled items to have components drop off orc pawns? Tradeskilled items intended for high levels (as seen by the Required 46 tag on PoP items) will have components that drop off high level mobs. I never stated tradeskills were tied to levels, I merely stated that the "good stuff" dropped off high level mobs, and was intended for "high level" players. Or do you think level 1s should be using PoP gear?

I was just using LoY as an example but I guess it works for all of the downloaded options I guess.
Ok. Last week my hard drive melted down. (Ticking clock noises as the read/write heads slam back and forth endlessly. "Primary master hard drive fail" and "no IDE drives found" messages. For the non-technical people... "Itek you are boned. Buy a new hard drive, for you currently have a 600 dollar paperweight.")

It was a SERIOUS pain in the assets fixing the problem. All my data is just GONE. (Settings, note's to self, tradeskill skill up rate data, logs, victory screenshots... all gone... everything I've done since PoP went live .... vaporware.)

Reinstalling EQ took perhaps an hour and a half including swapping all the CDs in and out. Patching took just about an hour or so. (High speed connection, but had to restart the patcher 3 times. Kept running into a really weird "couldn't create font" messages.)

If you look at the CDs (and Downloads) there are -2- things in the package. A disk and an account key. They disk has the software, the account key is only typed in once to activate that software on an account.

If you have LoY installed and activated you can use it on your computer. If you visit a friend who doesn't have it you CAN (to the best of my knowledge) force the patcher, in advanced settings, to download the files to the friends computer. Now you can access LoY from that computer, but your friend still can't

IN THEORY, as previous posters have said, all you REALLY have to have is the original EQ disk. You install that, patch the patcher, set the settings to download everything, patch all the "missing" files, and you are up and running.

Generally it's slower to do it this way, and much harder on SOE's resources. I remember back when Luclin came out they stated that the Luclin files would NOT be available to download from the patch server, because it would cause too much of a load. I, at the time, said "bah, they HAVE to let you patch the zone files, what happens if your local copy is corrupted?" Like all statements from SOE/Verant I take them with a grain of salt.

My two favorite SOE/Verant statements of all time.

Abashi: Alchemy is working as intended.
Itek (and a few thousand other people): Have you tested it with NON-GM client?

Abashi: We can't have "high-exp, do only once" quests. We don't have a way of storing information like that on characters.

Hehe. Here I thought that computers were REALLY GOOD at and DESIGNED TO store information on/in/as files. I mean the computer seems to keep track of all my FACTIONS fairly well.

Can I have a job at SOE designing quests? Please?

*Your faction standing with KOS-to-All has gotten worse*

Is anyone but me just annoyed at the spam? And wondering why SOE bothers? I mean aren't all Lesser Jord Giants and Greater Jord Giants set to Kill-On-Sight to all PCs with NO way to gain faction with them.

They start out wanting to kill me.
I can't get them to like me.
They start wanting to kill me... even more...

They can't possibly lust after my blood any harder...
They can't possibly lust after my blood any harder...

Am I missing something? Is there some mysterious way to get "residents of hate" to like me? Do they intend to put in quests for people that have NEVER killed a single BoT giant who decide they'd be better off killing Askr instead? ("Bah, I don't NEED to get to elemental planes, the lewt from Askr is tu phat 2 p455 u|o") (my apologies for the dewdspeek, l33t isn't)
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

Ok yes the faction spam can be annoying for things we know we can't fix. I "assume" these factions are there as flags that can be toggled for Guides/GMs which would allow them to hang with their Nadox/ KOS-to-All buddies.

                    Itek: That always annoyed me.

I was actually WITH a game dev, in the LDoN beta, and asked if there was a way to improve my .... what was it??... "Steelslave Collective" faction.

And he said "No", and that "Faction is just for flavor". Or something similar.

So the "point" of Luclin was introducing AA, and something that happened in Kunark(The level cap raised to 60 in Kunark), and something that happened 6 months after Luclin release? Interesting!

I'm going to have to agree with the others that anyone who sees only one or two "Points" to any given expansion is missing the point of the expansions.

There is A LOT of meat to any given expansion, and if you're only buying it for one thing, or two, than you're kinda missing out. People who only used LoY for bankspace and dye missed out jon neat zones. People who ignore the zones in PoP , because they "have a life" miss out on breathtaking stuff.

Alright, Lilosh, I'm a **** noob. I only started this game 13 months ago, forgive me for failing to keep my pre-history straight.

Do you at least pretend to see what I'm getting at? Maybe you (generic) have a job. I don't. And after blantantly leaving me out of LDON beta after Denmother-sama was so very kind to let me on her list, SOE is gonna have to start justifying why they want my money a little better than just, 'hey look we have something new and cool for you to give us more money for.' So far, I have/had not seen that. All I see is this 'orc from Tron' on the patcher and 'new AAs, new this, that, and the other thing!'

SOE has not shown me that they value me (generic) enough that I (specific) should blindly give them more money. If they did/would/have, at least I could make an informed decision. Since they have not, who is the blind one, Lilosh? The one who asks questions before throwing a chunk of her limited money at people she will never see? Or the person who said, 'oh, new expansion, guess it's time to give them more money. Nevermind that I hardly know what it's about; it's related to EQ! It must be cool!'

Maybe Gates will be the coolest thing to happen to EQ since [insert your favorite change here]. MY POINT IS: is it really so wicked to ask for more information beforehand?

Itek is the one source of Gates information that I have run across other than the little screen on the patcher and various rumors from no-names /ooc'ing in pok. Thank you, Itek.

Lilosh, you and I are apparently two out of "the six people on any server who actually like Loy zones," and I believe that is your quote. When I get to 46, I'll go to the **** planes with you. Why do you think I'm ON Tarew in the first place?? I want to see this game this time around. But every one else is either head down in LDON, or complaining they can't find a 64/65 chanter to duo-charm in PoT-a.

I was really quite calm when i first posted in this thread, and there's nothing to say that i'm not, except I can't seem to get across that all I want is MORE and COHERENT information about Gates than SOE has seen fit to give me. I do not see it as an offense to ask for more information before giving anyone money, under ANY circumstance, ever.

I was recommended about half a week ago to buy LDoN. But there's no way to 'try before you buy', there's very little way to see what i would be getting before i drop $60. Same with Gates. I hear about it; I just don't see it, don't know it, don't understand it. And when i ask for more infomation, I get jumped. Even in game; the guy I was talking to was like, 'who cares, it's the rule of EQ, you buy the expansions.' I balked. That's the kind of blindness that bothers me.

So, now, thanks to Itek, I have a half an idea that there's going to be a new Pok-type zone. From the things that come through the storywindows, I could assume the new zones are going to be kinda an extention of loy, i guess (if I wanted to make assumptions). I can even see how this Berzerker thing is appropriately released with Gates. BUT: it's so much 'hearsay'. Or just text. Like, the official Gates page says this thing:

"New Tribute System enhances gameplay by allowing players to choose beneficial attributes, skills, or effects through offerings at their home cities."

"ok", thinks the customer.... "... and?" I just want more information. Maybe I'm still a little burned over LDoN, maybe i'm getting a little bleed-over from looking for apartments and cars and other things. I simply do not see it wrong to ask more questions and want more information, especially before spending more of a limited supply of money.

                                Enough.

SoE has posted all they're posting about the expansion on their web site.

This is about the same as they gave out for LDoN, or LoY.

This thread is closed before it gets any more heated.
