heh, ya. With LDoN, Best Buy was selling the boxed version *cheaper* than you could get the download - so save money (minus transportation costs) and get extra stuff.

Electroic download, while really appealing to start, has wound up becoming the "pay more money for less product at a savings of increased convience".

so.... what's the point of this expansion? New race/class/whatever-the-Berzerker-is? Only more zones? A cross between Loy/LDoN (since I think they're adding more adventure places). This one, more than any other, seems to me to be only a money getter, just because it seems so... disjointed?

And does it really have anything to do with the Fallen/Lefalen server thing?

Right, they're only adding new zones, mobs, classes, aa, spells, quests, tradeskills, and items. Let's string them up!

Folks, let's wait until the expansion is OUT before we badmouth it, ok? After hearing how PoP, LoY, LDoN, and now GoD were the demonic work of Lucifer himself, it's getting just a smidge old.

Let's judge Sony on their actions and their product, not on their hype or marketing. :-) If the expansion stinks, I'll be the first to start the angry mob of peopole. But let's not quote their PR and Marketing, and then use it to decry the new expansion.

And hey, if ya'll don't like the idea of Discord, Don't buy it. For a very very very long time, until I recieved it as a present, I didn't buy LDoN, for various reasons. You *ALWAYS* have the option of wether Expansion X is worth $25 (or whatever) to you.

Even from one who has been accused of being too "Negative" , this is getting to be a bit too much.

Yup, I threw that in as a bit of humor. :-)

seems norrath is going to be invaded by a legion that has destroyed other worlds/plane and presumably their own pantheon or have an overgod backing them. over god would be like if quam, veeshan and the sleeper had a kid sort of power. kinda the only way to go after smacking our own pantheon around.

I'm not holding my breath for "new tradeskills." It seems like it's been since PoP since high-end Tradeskillers have had anything decent to make...

Well, PoP was the last "high level" expansion. LoY was for 30-60 and LDoN was for all levels. This new expansion claims 50+, so my guess would be that there will be new tradeskilled items to match that level. Having a low level expansion with l33t tradeskilled items wouldn't make sense.

Thanks Lilosh - that made me laugh

I bounced on test earlier today during the patch and a person was stating that he wasn't going to buy GoD and was anyone else. He seemed to keep following me (just coincidence I hope), but he kept bad mouthing a product that doesn't even exists yet.

A bit sad in some ways, because to me, not being old school, every expansion has had something good to offer. And yes some not so good things, but this still is a game and no one is being forced to buy anything here.

But I do enjoy hearing people complain how horrible expansion X is (usually LOY) and in the same breath complain that there expanded bank slot space is full -- that one gets me every time.

There may or may not be something for each individual out there in this expansion. We won't know until February, but I suspect things like expanded AAs will breath a little new life into those who are 65, Time geared and max AAs. I am a long ways from that, but still excited.

Well, except that since tradeskill skills aren't tied to levels, I don't see how the two correlate to each other. Maybe I should clarify. It would be nice to have some new items to make at 250 skill.

Lilosh, you missed my point. The 'point' of Luclin was AAs, raising the level cap, and Bazaar. The 'point' of PoP was to give a whole bunch of hard zones for the people with no life, plus books for everyone else. Loy was a handful of new zones, but I always thought the 'point' was all the 'interface' things that came... bank, maps, new race, dyes. LDoN's 'point' is a new way to do what you've always done before.

Thus, I don't (yet) see the 'point' of Gates. that make more sense?

Hmm.... let me take a stab at a few things.

"What's the point of this expansion?"

Gates will be a combination of PoP-2, LoY-2, and LDoN-2.

There will be VERY HIGH level content and more AA abilities. Plus a new PoK-like zone with quests and tradeskill stuff, and probably some rapid-transport additions.

The new "permanent" zones will likely be attached somewhere hideously inconvenient and include some UI updates, plus new "universal enemies" like LoY.

There will be instanced zones, and from the "storyline" this will most likely be "LDoN Theme Six" adding all new augmentations and gear to buy from a vendor with points earned in a new theme.

It's a 6 month expansion. I posted the history elsewhere but I'll post it here as well.

EQ went live --- March 1999
                            Kunark live --- April 2000
                            Velious live --- December 2000
                            Luclin live --- December 2001
                            PoP live --- October 2002
                            LoY live --- Febuary 2003
                            LDoN live --- September 2003
                            Gates ETA --- Febuary 2004 ??

The YEAR expansions (Kunark, Luclin, PoP) had major changes to the game and vast stretches of zone added.

The 6-Month expansions (Velious, LoY, LDoN) had much smaller changes and much smaller numbers of zones. (LDoN had 48 zones, but we all can tell they were fairly easy to construct.)

Gates seems poised to expand on 3 fairly broad fronts. PoP level content. (50+ content) LDoN Content. (10 instanced zones = new theme) And LoY content (I'd bet that the new mobs have something to do with the "story" from LoY. Yes in an ideal world they would simply make this "optional download" like "The Hole/Warrens/JaggedPine/Nedaria's." But since they need to pay their programmers, and since this content will be based on 3 different expansions, all of which you would need anyway to get any use out of the "Gates" zones, that's not really feasible.

                            Now the second burning question....

"Why should I download it / Why should I buy it in stores / Why Why Why??"

Ok. They have come right out and said that people who buy the box are gonna get a toy surprise. Two actually. One physical (oh, another keychain) and one virtual (oh, a nifty staff) like LDoN did.

I had -hoped- that they would either give another 50% WR bag, or *twitch* add a second WR bag that could be combined with the first for a 100% WR bag. Sigh. I'm gonna wonder about this nifty staff for a long time. But I -highly- doubt it's gonna be on par even with the Enc Epic so I might wind up /claim'ing it on some other character.

If you don't want the toys download it. Heck you can "pre-download" it. I am. I did with LDoN. You can always burn a Gates CD just like the LoY CD for backup purposes. Yes, it's lots faster to install from CD then from patching. Even if you have to patch the changed zones. Because it lightens the load on the server.

                            Which is cheaper? OMG!!

EQ cost 40 - 45 bucks. I bought my copy in August so I didn't shell out the full 50.
                            Kunark ... 30
                            Velious ... 30
                            Luclin ... 30
                            PoP ... 30
                            LoY ... 20
                            LDoN ... 27

52 months at 10 a month. Well more like 11 a month on average.

                            207 for software
                            572 for subscription

779 bucks. Not counting hardware, internet access, website subscriptions, or anything else.

30 bucks to download. 27 bucks and free delivery from EB due to a discount for going thru Allak. Gosh, think I'll get the nifty toys and save myself 3 dollars. For each account. (Me and TheWife have seperate accounts.)

                            779 + 35 (3 months) + 30 = 844 *2 = 1688
                            779 + 35 + 27 = 841 * 2 = 1682

                            1682 / 1688 = 99.6445%

6 dollars. I might save 6 dollars. I can buy .... hmm... A McD's value meal AND an apple pie.
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

I like both. The download version I like because I don't have wait around for my CD to get shipped to Europe and can play on release day with the rest of my friends. The buyable one I like because it's nice to have an installation CD for the inevitable reformats.

I'll probably buy download for one account, CD for another. Just wish we had more info on what kind of staff so I could decide which account to get the CD version on. Oh and after the character and billing problems with the last preorder I'm going to wait a while before I preorder. I'm soo sick of talking to 4+ GMs and staying on hold for 20 minutes on overseas phone rates because they can't fix their frigging system.
