  • Trivial Fail Adjustment Broken?

I have noticed that I am failing a lot more trivial combines since a patch or two back...

At first I shrugged it off and figured it was the RNG doing its thing, but now I'm not so sure...

I did a run of 200 lacquered opals last night - they trivial at 120 and my skill is 186 plus a Geerlok, so a functioning skill level of 195...

I failed a whole stack of Opals in a run of 200 - that's 10% fail rate! Ouch!

I've noticed more than usual fails in brewing and baking as well - my skills there (on different characters) are 250 and 242 (without Geerlok) respectively...

    Anyone else notice this?

The "lower failure rate" or "extremely trivial items"... is a poorly understood feature SOE implmented. At the time it was done, it was briefly written up on Sony boards. To the best of my recollection (which I admit is a little foggy) it goes like this:

Items produced through tradeskill recipes will have lower failure rates when the tradeskiller level is MUCH higher than the trivial of the recipe.

And when they say MUCH higher, they did say on the order of 200+ Skill OVER the Trivial of the recipe.

The intention being to allow the truely trivial combines to suceed. It is annoying to be a 250 blacksmith, and fail even once at making Metal Bits...

However, I agree with Aeronwy about higher failure. I have done literally 100s of thousands of combines to get to where I am. Before the "change" of making much lower trivial items not to fail or fail very miniscule amount on combines, the average failure rate on all combines were about 5%. I have done enough combines to know, specially combines close to trivial.

Lately, I have noticed that the items closer to trivial but not yet trivial has about 10-12% failure rate. The ones way below trivial does indeed fail a lot less or never fail but ones closer to the trivial fails a not more than before the patch.

This is costing me a lot of pps since some skill ups I do to pay for my way up the skill, at least partially. By having double the failure rate before the fix, I am losing a lot more pps skilling up.

While this does not relate directly, it may help get us both some information.

Last night I decided to make a serious run on my GM in tailoring (it was 191). I had been saving arctic wyvern hides and velium studs for a while along with a few phase spider silks.

My being a halfling druid fairly well equiped at 55th level my wisdom without KEI is 254. So just to be on the safe side I got KEI and any other buff I could get and before I started my WIS and INT were maxed and my DEX was 238.

I started off on the phase spider silks (trivial at 222) and did 6 combines. I then started on the arctic wyvern masks (trivial 250+) and performed 100 combines.

All the time I refused to look for increases as I was secretly hoping for 25 level-ups but being more realistic and knowing I would get between 5 and 12. Imagine my shock when after 106 combines I had only gotten 2 level-ups.

There must be something wrong after the last patch to cause this. I could understand so few if I was doing 10 or 20 combines a day. But, doing 106 combines in a row and only getting 2 level-ups is completely unexceptable.

I would love to hear if anyone else is having this problem since our last patch or two.

Whether you were doing 10 to 20 combines a day or 106 all at once is irrelevant.

Your experience is not abnormal. Random numbers have streaks. Get used to it.

OK - how about splitting velium bricks/blocks into pieces?

3 failures on about 100 attempts with a skill of 201.

            Admittedly a small sample....

I've made just over 300 attempts at star ruby encrusted steins recently, failed less than 5% of the star ruby+lacquer combines. Failed about 60% of the final combines, and only 2 of the firings on the about 120 unfired steins I ended up with.

Skill level in JC is 176+geerlock
Pottery varied from 222 to 238, without geerlock.
Can't say that I see any issues with failure rate at this point.
