  • Vendor Upstock - GM Response

The following is in response to a query sent to my server GM concerning Vendor mining/Upstock and Inappropriate naming on my server... It appears that the vendors are indeed broken and "Bug" reports are in order... Safe Journeys all...

    Greetings Xxxx,

This is GM Jildore I am sorry you feel that way on both of your questions.
To help you further on your questions, I will try and explain for you. A
vendor that is in a city or where ever has so many slots that can be filled
with stuff sold to them by other players. When one sells to the vendor what
ever they sell turns around and the NPC puts it in one of his open slots to
sell it back. Now lets say that one NPC merchant has a total of 40 slots
open, and a player sells 50 items to him, he will only show the first 40
items sold, and the other 10 are there but not. If you buy an item from him
it will push one of the other 10 items up. This has been like this for the
entire time EverQuest come out. For the second question, if you find a name
that doesn't fit the world of EverQuest or is offensive to you, please
/petition in game so that we can look further into the name.

If you have any issues in the future please feel free to send an in game
petition or go to the contact your gm web page at:

Am I missing something? where does the GM say that vender mining is broken?

All I see him saying is that, vender mining is working as it always has.

*edit* n/m I just found the posts about people think that vender mining is broke. I didn't know that might be an issue.

I'm beginning to think he hasn't bought from a vendor lately.

That is how it -used- to work. It no longer does. Easily proven by sitting at a vendor and overselling them junk, then clearing out a slot.

      Poof. No hidden inventory.

This wouldn't be the first time that a GM didn't know that part of the game had been fixed/broken/nerfed and gave a player old knowledge.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but, that was a MAC server GM.

I received an answer from Absor today:
              I did some research.

              Here's how it works.

It used to be the case that merchants had 90 slots but could only display 80. There was always a limit on how much stuff they could hold. It just wasn't possible for a player to know if there was room for new items in their inventory. Now we've made it so that you can see everything in inventory.

So, yes, it is intentional. We don't have any plans to change it back.

              A
So they didn't exactly remove the hidden inventory, but made it visible.

Many thanks to Absor for his reply!

It does beget an interesting question, though. Has anyone gone through and actually counted the slots currently visible?

If we can see 90 slots, then Absor's reply is correct -- they didn't take away any slots; they just made them all visible.

On the other hand, if we can only see 80 slots, then they did in fact remove the ten hidden slots, as opposed to revealing them. So while technically "you can see everything in [the merchant's] inventory", we'd still be losing out on ten slots.

I'll try to remember to do this later on.

I'd find it ... odd if they just added 10 slots to the former 80 visible to make 90 visible. Plenty of people have modded vendor windows to display 80slots simultaneously - they would not see the 10 extra normally displayed slots, and buying from a full vendor's first 80, creating an openning, would cause everything to shift up one, making something that was in the last 10 in the first 80, making it appear as though the "under-the-table" was still working.

Since I've heard of NO reports like that ... I'm kinda doubtful the window was expanded to be 90 slots.

                        Yikes.

Badly worded reply on my part! I guess I didn't re-read it.

There were 90 spaces. You could see 80.

Now there are only 80 spaces. You can still see 80.

                        That's what's changed.

                          Thanks for the clarification, Absor.

If I may, why did SoE decide to do this? It's obvious that many of use enjoyed the pursuit of "vendor diving", which in turn was a fairly harmless thing to do, certainly within the realm of the PNP and the EULA.

Was it a database space issue? Or did someone think it would be nice to make vendor slots a nice rounded number (and this someone not realizing that it would greatly hinder - or destroy, depending upon whom you ask - a generally well loved part of the game)?

                              Hello-

(*previous reply lost just as I got to signing it - so this is a re-create*)

I also Thank You Absor for the clairification.

However - I would hope we could get a 'why' - since no immediate reason seems apparent.

I know some have thought it a memory space issue - to which I say - drop visible to 70 - and keep the 10 hidden. Another solution might be interesting. Have the NPCs buy all that is sold to them - but only offer back items that are 'Items' or marked as Tradeskill - this would save looking through drivel - and might be feasible....Though I am NO programmer!

I hear that SOE is 'interested' in ideas that would help reduce the plat in the game. Well - Merchant Mining did that to some extent. There were certainly days that I bought stuff out - only to find nothing there. thats Plat out of the game. I guess I am also curious as to WHY the plat is wanted to be reduced... I mean - does XYZ Paladin who worked his butt off skilling up on smithing (*spending considerable time, AND plat*) pose some sort of threat if he has 1 million plat in the bank?

One way to reduce the plat in the game would be to reduce the flow of plat INTO the game. I remember making the rounds in POT checking the merchants and seeing all sorts of non-items that the NPC wanted like 120Plat for. I doubt that the NPC Bought it from the PC for 7GP - so if the items that had NO use (non-tradeskill, and non-gear) were either reduced - or their value at NPCs was reduced - this would go a long way in helping the palt situation. However - the bigger issue of course is WHY - and I have my theories - but I will keep them to myself for now.

In any case - Thanks so much for the clarification and the Confirmation - at least I dont have to burn any more paper symbols to try and appease the gods..... Oh - NM.....
