  • Arrow Skill Checks

Ok, forgive me if this is a redundant post from some time before, but I found nothing on it.

I read on the fletching recipies section of the main-site that the only skill check in making arrows was that of the highest skill required component. I noticed while making arrows for purely getting skill and for getting skill + useful arrows, that I was getting greatly varying success rates. When using all the cheapest components and silver tips, I was getting about 17/20 success rate(even getting a perfect set once ). When using silver tips, bone vanes, small grooves, and ceramic shafts I was getting about a 12 - 14 out of 20 success rate. In both situations this was over 10 stacks of combines(20 total), and both had silver tips as being the highest skill check.

just posting wondering if I have had some freak of logic fluke, or if others have noticed this also.

I have a little bit different experience!

    :?

I am only 169 in Fletching so not too big exp but

    - to be honest - I didn't experience what you did - but I have the impression that when I am using one component at the highest trivial and the others are the cheapest ones (the lowest trivial) then skill goes up slower than if I am using the other components with higher trivial.

But it is only impression - do not based on any real measurements !

You may have a point, but without specifics it's hard to tell. First off, you only did 200 combines each. That's not a big number, statistically speaking. (Your wrist may feel otherwise.) Also, you didn't track precise success rates, so there's just your impression of the success rate. If you really want to dig into this, you'd need to keep exact track of successes, do more sets of combines (very hard since your skill would be increasing durin the experiment, throwing things off) and have other people repeat it. What you saw may (or may not) be just a fluxuation in the randomness.

But honestly, I'm not sure it even matters too much. Most people doing this make arrows for skill ups, not successes. The successes get sold to help offset costs but really this isn't a very expensive operation in the grand scheme of things.

Hmmm. A thought purely from the devil's advocate side regarding the current "mode of thought" on skilling up. Is it possible that there is a "check" against each component? I.E. I make Ceramic Vaned, Steel Shaft, Silver tipped arrows <pausing to wince at the price compared to the "standard"> with a skill of 170. At that skill, all three components would be above my skill so could it be possible that there are 3 checks (1 against 182 and 2 against 202)? I would seem that if skill-up checks were made against individual components then successes would be to. Has anyone done any data checking to see if there is a higher failure rate say between 182 and 202 if using both ceramic vanes and steel shafts rather than just one?

Actually, I was doing the old (expensive) way and when I switched to just trivialling one component, I found that I got way more skillups (and successes).

My Fletching is now 222 and I am on to bows, but what I noticed with arrows was that I did get more skill ups on hunting arrows (all the best parts) but not by much. Out of 100 combines using all the best parts I would get on average 5 to 6 more skill points than when I used only 1 expensive part. The difference is the cost. I was able to do 6 or 7 times as many combines doing just skill arrows than doing hunting arrows. There for I did get more skill ups, but it comes down to a volume of combines rather than make a stack, go out and use them, come back make another...

So it came down to perspective for me, i wanted the best arrows while hunting, but i needed to skill up faster to get the batter arrows.

            Hope this helps
